Pharmacological properties of drugs

Herbion plantain syrup

prescribed to patients for the treatment of dry non-productive cough. The aqueous extracts of plantain grass and mallow flowers included in the preparation have a mild soothing and enveloping effect on the irritated mucous membrane of the inflamed bronchi. Ascorbic acid, which is part of the syrup, increases the body's defenses, as a result of which the drug also acts as an immunomodulator. The active components of Gerbion plantain syrup inhibit the activity of pathogenic bacteria, which prevents the spread of the inflammatory process to the lower respiratory tract.

Plantain extract contains saponins - substances that, when they enter the gastrointestinal tract, begin to actively stimulate the secretion of bronchial glands, which reduces the viscosity of sputum and makes it easier for the patient to expectorate. Patients who took Gerbion plantain syrup for a dry cough noted that within a couple of days from the start of therapy, the sputum was expectorated well, and the paroxysmal cough and severe chest pain completely disappeared. After a productive cough appears and sputum is discharged, plantain syrup is replaced with Herbion primrose syrup.

Primrose syrup Herbion

prescribed to patients with a wet, productive cough with good sputum discharge. The liquid extracts of primrose root and thyme herb included in the syrup improve the process of expectoration of sputum, relieve inflammation in the bronchi and prevent the descent of pathological exudate into the lower respiratory tract.

Menthol, which is part of primrose syrup, facilitates breathing and stimulates the ciliated epithelium of the bronchi, due to which the accumulated liquefied sputum is well removed during coughing.

Conclusion

“Gerbion” is an excellent example of a cough syrup that can effectively eliminate the cause of attacks, while containing only natural ingredients. There are two types of syrup: for dry cough and for wet cough.

Only a doctor can determine whether it belongs to one of these types of cough with 100% certainty, so before consuming it is necessary to consult a medical institution. Also, make sure there are no contraindications before using the syrup, and if there are still contraindications, notify your doctor.

Do not start a cough, as it may signal the progression of a serious illness. The sooner a diagnosis is made and treatment begins, the fewer complications a person is at risk of encountering.

Method of administration and dosage of the drug

For dry, painful paroxysmal cough, Herbion plantain syrup

prescribed to patients according to the following scheme:

  • adults and adolescents 3 times a day. The dose of the drug is determined by the doctor individually,
  • children over 2 years old - a full measuring spoon 3 times a day,
  • children over 7 years old – 3 times a day, no more than 1 measuring spoon.

The syrup is taken between meals or during meals - this does not in any way affect the therapeutic properties of the drug. The duration of therapy with plantain syrup is determined by the doctor individually, but according to the instructions, as a rule, it does not exceed 4-5 days. After normalization of sputum discharge, the patient is transferred to treatment with Gerbion primrose syrup.

Primrose syrup Herbion

prescribed to adults and children for the treatment of wet cough according to the following scheme:

  • teenagers and adults – 3 times a day, 2-3 scoops;
  • children under 5 years old – half a measuring spoon 3 times a day;
  • children over 5 years old – 5 ml (1 scoop) of the drug 3 times a day.

The duration of the course of therapy is determined by the doctor, after which the patient is prescribed massages and physiotherapeutic procedures if the cough is not yet completely cured.

Gerbion syrups can be washed down with water or warm tea if desired.

Contraindications in children

Children can be given medicine starting from the third year of life. The same contraindications apply for them as for adults, with the exception that children under two years of age are strictly prohibited from using the syrup.

Parents of children from 2 to 18 years old must make sure that there are no contraindications before starting treatment with Gerbion. To be sure, it is strongly recommended to consult with your doctor.

Use of the drug during pregnancy and breastfeeding

The use of Gerbion syrups in the first trimester of pregnancy is prohibited, since there is no reliable data in medicine regarding the safety of the drug’s effects on the fetus. The use of Gerbion syrups for the treatment of wet and dry cough in pregnant women in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters is possible only after assessing the benefit/risk for the mother and fetus. Treatment in this case is carried out under the strict supervision of a doctor in minimally effective therapeutic doses.

The use of Gerbion preparations for the treatment of cough during breastfeeding is not recommended for women due to the high risk of developing allergic reactions in infants, since the active ingredients of syrups penetrate into breast milk. If a course of drug therapy is necessary, it is recommended to interrupt lactation for a while and transfer the baby to artificial feeding.

Is “Gerbion” with primrose suitable for everyone?

Like any drug, “Gerbion” for wet cough has its contraindications. Due to the fact that today there is no reliable information about the effect of this drug on the fetus, it is not recommended to use it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Just like syrup with plantain, this drug should not be taken if you have diabetes, fructose intolerance, as well as impaired glucose absorption and an allergic reaction to the components of the syrup.

The instructions attached to the drug "Gerbion" also emphasize the undesirability of its use in children under two years of age, as well as those who have suffered from false croup.

Drug overdose

With long-term uncontrolled use of Gerbion syrups, patients may develop overdose symptoms, which include the following:

  • nausea;
  • diarrhea;
  • vomit;
  • changes in blood glucose levels;
  • disturbances in liver function;
  • hives.

In order to prevent the development of the above reactions, you should not self-medicate or exceed the indicated dose of the drug.

If such symptoms appear, stop treatment with Gerbion syrups and consult a doctor.

Interactions with drugs

Primrose syrup Herbion

It is prohibited to combine with drugs that suppress the cough center (codeine, sinekod and others), as this leads to congestion in the bronchi and the addition of a secondary bacterial infection.

Herbion plantain syrup

Do not prescribe simultaneously with expectorants, as these drugs stimulate the cough center and will cause new attacks of painful cough.

The use of immunomodulators or antiviral drugs prescribed by a doctor simultaneously with Gerbion syrups enhance each other’s actions and contribute to a speedy recovery of the patient.

Types of antitussive drugs

Cough syrups and tablets can be divided into the following types according to the principle of their action:

  • Mucolytics. They are able to dilute sputum, increasing its quantity. They are used for dry coughs, when there is too little sputum, which leads to irritation of the mucous membrane of the respiratory tract.

  • Expectorants. Such products, as a rule, facilitate the removal of phlegm and mucus in a natural way - their action prevents it from lingering in the respiratory tract, complicating air circulation.
  • Means that alleviate the condition of the mucous membrane. They are usually used in combination with other drugs. Such medications promote rapid healing of wounds and microcracks that occur as a result of severe coughing, and also prevent their occurrence.
  • Cough reflex suppressors. The drugs do not cure coughs - they simply prevent a person from coughing. They are used mainly in cases where the patient suffers so much from attacks of tormenting cough that he is unable to lead a normal life. Carefully! May cause drug addiction. Use only as prescribed by a doctor.

It is best to use tablets or syrups that are developed on a natural basis - from medicinal plants. They do not irritate the respiratory tract and act gently, and do not have a detrimental effect on the human liver and kidneys, as is often the case with drugs of synthetic origin.
