Prospan is a herbal medicine based on ivy extract intended for the treatment of cough.
The medicine contains saponins, flavonoids and triterpenoids. It has an antitussive, antispasmodic, antimicrobial and expectorant effect, reduces the viscosity of sputum, facilitating its removal from the bronchi.
It is important that the drug does not suppress the activity of the respiratory center located in the reticular formation of the medulla oblongata, which is typical for codeine-like drugs and other synthetic drugs with central action.
Release form and composition
Today Prospan can be purchased at the pharmacy in three forms:
- syrup in a glass container for children and adults, which comes with a dispenser lid;
- syrup in miniature sachets, each containing 5 ml of liquid;
- drops in a container with a dropper lid, used orally and also as inhalations.
Each type of drug has a different amount of active substance. This should be remembered before starting treatment:
- per milliliter of syrup contains 7 mg of ivy extract in the form of dry powder - this applies to both the contents of the bottle and the bag;
- per milliliter of drops – 20 mg of active substance.
Composition and release form
Prospan is developed based on ivy extract. The leaves of this plant contain elements whose beneficial properties help treat diseases of the upper respiratory tract. Saponins help reduce the viscosity of secretions. Flavonoids reduce inflammation and help relax smooth muscles, i.e. cope with cramps.
The drug has the following properties:
- Mucolytic – the drug reduces the thickness of sputum;
- Expectorant – promotes the release of secretions;
- Antispasmodic – relaxes the muscle tissue of the bronchi;
- Anti-inflammatory – effectively eliminates inflammation.
Prospan is currently available in two forms:
- Syrup in glass bottles with a dosage of 100 and 200 milliliters, as well as in small sachets. Each package contains twenty-one packets, each containing 5 ml of medicine.
- Drops in a glass bottle with a volume of 20, 50, 100 milliliters. The lid is a dispenser. The peculiarity of the drops is that they can be used both orally and for inhalation.
100 ml of syrup contains 7 mg of ivy leaf extract and additional components: distilled water, cherry flavoring, citric acid, sorbitol solution, potassium sorbate (preservative E202), xanthan gum (stabilizer E415).
The content of the main active ingredient in one milliliter of drops is 20 mg. Additionally, the preparation includes fennel oil, anise, peppermint, ethanol 47%, sodium saccharin.
Pharmacological effect
Prospan is a herbal cough medicine used as symptomatic therapy in the treatment of acute (pharyngitis, laryngitis, tracheitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, initial stages of whooping cough) and chronic inflammatory diseases of the respiratory tract, accompanied by cough with difficult to separate sputum.
Prospan reduces the viscosity of sputum and promotes its removal, and also has:
- Mucolytic effect, which reduces the viscosity and liquefaction of difficult-to-separate sputum, practically without increasing its volume.
- Expectorant action - in which the process of releasing mucus from the respiratory tract is facilitated mainly by reducing its viscosity.
- The spasmolytic effect prevents the occurrence of bronchospasm (expands the bronchi and prevents the development of their narrowing).
Due to the bronchodilator effect of Prospan, a dry (non-productive), obsessive cough is stopped, and thanks to the expectorant and mucolytic effects, the cough is transformed (transferred) from dry to wet, patients begin to cough up sputum, which is an important principle in the treatment of cough. In addition, there is data on the antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects of Prospan.
Who is prescribed the drug Prospan?
The scope of application of the tool in question is quite wide. It is prescribed for acute and chronic diseases of the respiratory system and lungs, in particular for bronchial asthma, obstructive, acute and chronic bronchitis, acute laryngotracheitis, COPD, stenosis, pneumonia, laryngitis, pharyngitis, tracheitis, tracheobronchitis, tuberculosis, influenza, cystic fibrosis, etc. d. That is, Prospan is used for ailments accompanied by difficult to separate sputum, non-productive cough, wet and dry cough.
If treatment with the drug in question is started in a timely manner, then in most cases no complications are observed.
Due to the fact that the drug has an antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effect, actively inhibits the growth of microbes, eliminating the need for the combined use of antibiotics that negatively affect the child’s body. Prospan can be used by children who experience frequent allergic reactions.
Indications for use
What does it help with? Prospan is indicated for use in various inflammatory pathologies of the lungs and bronchial tree (bronchitis, tracheitis, pneumonia), accompanied by the production of viscous sputum and difficulty in its discharge.
Indications for use of Prospan
Syrup and drops are prescribed for drug therapy of the same diseases. Cough during influenza or other acute viral illness is considered the main indication. This pathology is caused by viral particles entering the mucous membranes of the respiratory system, which act as an entry gate for infection. Within a few days, the virus reproduces in cells and spreads throughout the body. A variety of cold symptoms appear, including coughing, sneezing, weakness, fever and nasal congestion.
If there are signs of a serious infectious disease, it is recommended to consult a doctor. The specialist will conduct a diagnosis and prescribe a suitable drug therapy regimen.
The drug is indicated to relieve the symptoms of a cold complicated by impaired mucus discharge from the lungs and a persistent cough. These symptoms are caused by an inflammatory process in the mucous membrane. Sputum contains tissue breakdown products, inflammatory mediators and infectious toxins, so removing these substances is important to relieve cold symptoms.
Contraindications
A general contraindication for Prospan is individual hypersensitivity to its components. It is not recommended to use the drug during pregnancy and breastfeeding due to insufficient data on the safety of its use during this period.

Reviews
We have selected some reviews from people who have used Prospan syrup:
- Tatiana. We have both Prospan drops and syrup at home. When the older one coughs, we give inhalations with drops, and I give the younger one in syrup. The doctor prescribed it for the first time two years ago, so we use it when the cough starts. I like Prospan because it is natural and helps quite quickly.
- Nastya. I treat everyone with Prospan. For my youngest, inhalations help a lot with a dry cough. I give it to my husband if he feels sick, because we can’t get treatment at home - we have a lot of work! But it's very convenient. One sachet – one dose. opened it, drank it, threw it away, moved on. There is no need to dissolve or cook in any way. And my daughter loves the syrup in the bottle. It has a pleasant cherry taste (by the way, my husband says that the sachet has an orange taste), not a cure - but some kind of sweet fairy tale. But seriously, it helps very well, when the mucus is difficult to clear, to cough and clear it away. A good remedy. German, by the way, which for me personally is a plus.
- Kate. I suffered from a cough for about a month. During this time I managed to try all kinds of syrups, tablets and even cough drops. Probably, my torment with cough would have continued if my baby’s pediatrician had not recommended that I drink Prospan syrup. After just a couple of days of taking it, I was able to sleep enough so that the cough wouldn’t choke me, and after a week of taking it, the cough began to subside and went away completely. And after recovery, a friend advised me to have Prospan effervescent cough tablets in my home medicine cabinet.
Composition, release form and effectiveness of the drug
The main component of the medicine is dried ivy leaf extract, which has an expectorant effect.
Drops, in addition to the main substance, contain additional ingredients. In combination with auxiliary additives - anise, fennel, mint, the drug successfully relieves coughs of various origins. Anise is known as an antispasmodic that promotes metabolic processes in the body, fennel stimulates expectoration.
The syrup contains ivy extract, as well as additional components:
- potassium sorbate;
- lemon acid;
- cherry shock absorber;
- gum;
- water;
- sorbitol liquid.
The sugar substitute in the product is fructose, which allows the syrup to be used by patients suffering from glucose intolerance, prone to allergic reactions, as well as young children.
Prospan is available in the following dosage forms:
- Drops for internal use and inhalation. The solution is dark in color and smells of fennel and alcohol. Drops are produced in the form of bottles with a dropper stopper of 20, 50 or 100 ml.
- Syrup. It has a light brown color, with a cherry aroma and is available in 100 or 200 ml bottles with a measuring cap.
- Prospan forte – effervescent cough tablets. Can be used in children over 4 years of age.
- Sticks. Prescribed for children over 12 years of age and adults.
The herbal ingredients of Prospan have phlegm-thinning properties and also have antispasmodic, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory effects. Thanks to the flavonoids, saponins, and triterpenoids contained in the composition, most patients experience improved expectoration of mucus and sputum.
The main component - ivy extract - stimulates the functioning of the bronchi, has a mucolytic effect, reducing viscosity, stimulating the discharge of mucous secretions during coughing.
In addition, the drug relaxes the smooth muscles of the bronchi, resulting in rapid removal of mucus and the patient’s breathing ability is restored. The active ingredients have an antitussive effect, but do not stop the cough center of the brain.
Indications and possible contraindications for use
Many people are interested in what cough Prospan is prescribed for. The medicine helps not only with dry cough, but also with wet cough.
The mucolytic drug Prospan, used for pathologies and inflammations of the respiratory system, is created on the basis of herbal ingredients. Thanks to the effects of ivy extract, the medicine relieves coughs of various origins. The drug has an expectorant effect and is used in the treatment of inflammation of the upper respiratory system:
Acute and chronic forms of bronchitis. Bronchitis is most often accompanied by chesty coughing with significant mucus discharge. The syrup helps remove mucus, reduces viscosity, and stimulates the removal of mucus from the respiratory system.- Bronchial obstruction. The pathology is characterized by the accumulation of stagnant sputum in the bronchi. This condition is often triggered by asthma or a foreign object entering the lungs. As a rule, coughing with bronchial obstruction is wet, with purulent discharge. The drug is prescribed in combination therapy with other medications that help restore respiratory abilities.
- Bronchial asthma. Provokes severe coughing attacks with difficult to separate, viscous sputum. In asthma, the cough is dry with a minimal amount of mucus. Most often, the disease is a consequence of infectious pathologies. Thanks to its antispasmodic effect, the syrup softens coughing and eliminates the symptoms of the disease.
Thus, the medication is prescribed in combination treatment as a symptomatic remedy, successfully eliminating diseases of the respiratory system and lungs.
The limitation of use is excessive sensitivity to the ingredients of the product. You should not use the medicine during pregnancy or lactation, since the effect of the substances on the body during these periods has not been established.
It is forbidden to drink syrup if you have glucose-galactose intolerance, as well as for people suffering from alcohol addiction.
What to choose: Gedelix or Prospan?
Gedelix is cheaper than Prospan - this is its main advantage. But what is more suitable for the treatment of cough - there is no definite answer, because each person has a different immune system or reaction to a particular drug.
But still, there is one significant and decisive difference between these two analogues, which often determines the choice in favor of Prospan. The instructions for the medicine Gedelix indicate that for children whose age does not exceed two years, the use of the product is excluded, which cannot be said about Prospan syrup, which, in turn, has no age restrictions. Therefore, if we are talking about choosing a cough medicine for a small child, then it is better not to risk your health and choose a drug that is more expensive, but absolutely safe.
When choosing a medicine, it is important to consider whether there is an allergy to any of its components, and, based on this, make a choice.
Features of application
Before taking, the bottle must be shaken to dissolve the contents. The duration of treatment depends on the severity of the disease. The minimum course of therapy is 7 days. To consolidate the result after stopping treatment, it is necessary to continue using the medicine for two to three days. If there is no relief of symptoms during therapy, contact a specialist.

Prospan for children is produced in the form of 100 ml syrup. The drug is prescribed by a doctor for an unproductive or wet cough. With timely treatment, no negative consequences are observed.
The drug should not be combined with antibiotic drugs, since it contains active components of antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory action that suppress the development of microorganisms.
