Compound

This is a medicine with a combined composition, the main active ingredients of which are essential anise oil and a 10% ammonia solution. Thanks to these components, the drug has a double effect.

Essential anise oilAmmoniaEthanol

The oil is a natural antiseptic, as it contains phenolic compounds and carboxylic acids. When taken orally, the ether activates bronchial secretions and stimulates the process of mucus evacuation from the respiratory tract.

Ammonia makes sputum more viscous, making it easier to expectorate. It affects both the ciliated epithelium of the bronchi and the nerve endings, causing a reflex reaction of the body that promotes coughing up sputum.

Together, these substances have an excellent expectorant effect, which helps the cough to transform into a productive form. Reviews of ammonia-anise cough drops are only positive. If you ask anyone who has used them, you will only hear good things.

    This medicine is produced by domestic pharmaceutical factories, has a low cost and is an alcohol solution of anise drops and ammonia. The dual effect of the drug is determined precisely by the optimal composition. Anise oil stimulates the secretion and activity of the respiratory tract, which improves the process of mucus discharge from the bronchi and lungs. An ammonia solution (ammonia) thins the mucus, thus helping to speed up recovery.

    Side effects of the drug can include various manifestations of allergic reactions: skin rashes, slight swelling of the mucous membrane, itching and redness. The only correct action in this case would be to immediately stop taking the drug and take antihistamines. If you are taking cough pills at the same time, this may also be a contraindication.

    An important feature of taking ammonia-anise drops is its incompatibility with other mucaltic drugs, which is why prior consultation with a specialist is so important when taking them.

    Application

    The use of ammonia-anise drops is usually carried out according to the standard scheme, but the doctor can adjust these data taking into account your individual characteristics.

    For an adult, a single dose is 10–15 drops dissolved in a small amount of ordinary water; in their pure form, the drops can cause a burn to the mucous membrane due to the alcohol content. The recommended dosage frequency is 3-4 times a day until complete recovery. In rare cases, intolerance to the components of the drug may occur, causing allergic reactions. In this case, it is necessary to refuse treatment with anise drops.

    Maximum effectiveness in the treatment of any type of cough will be achieved only with complex therapy. It would be optimal to combine the use of medications (including anise drops) with chest massage, inhalations and rubbing.

    For the treatment of cough in children

    Even though the drops are safe, they should be used with caution when treating a cough, especially in a child. The main advantage of such a medicine will be a pleasant smell and taste, which is important when treating children. A one-time dose includes drops dissolved in a small amount of water. The number of drops is determined by the age of the child: one drop per year of life. Despite the absence of contraindications, anise drops should not be used to treat cough in a child under one year of age. At this age, the baby will not yet be able to cough up accumulated mucus on his own, so it is better to choose other medications.

    Ammonia-anise cough drops are an excellent remedy, effective, safe and, most importantly, inexpensive. Using drops as an aid will help thin and remove mucus from the lungs, which will automatically promote recovery.

    Reviews

    • Irina, 28 years old: “I remember anise drops from my childhood, but I started using them for my son when he was five years old. After we literally tried all the vaunted syrups, our pediatrician recommended this remedy. Improvements are not noticeable immediately, but somewhere on the third day, but the possibility of minimal chemical exposure is encouraging, because the drug does not contain dyes or flavors, like most children's cough syrups. Now I use the drops for my husband and I, and I also recommend them to my friends. Now, in the context of another crisis, less expensive treatment that is effective and affordable is very important.”
    • Nadezhda, 39 years old: “ The only complaint about this medicine is that, in my opinion, the taste is not very pleasant. Of course, you can be patient, especially since the result is quite good, and the cost is tempting. I’ve been using the drops for a long time; at one time I couldn’t buy them in our city, so my sister had to order them. It was even funny that I had to pay shipping for a cheap drug. Maybe there are better methods, but this one is the most reliable and proven.”
    • Anna, 51 years old: “ An undeservedly forgotten and very effective drug. I’ve even met modern analogues with almost identical composition, but ten times more expensive. As a former healthcare worker, I confidently recommend anise drops to my friends. One of the inexpensive and good drugs that you should always have in your home medicine cabinet.”
    • Oksana, 31 years old: “ There was a case when my child got sick at his grandmother’s in the village, and there was nothing at hand except this remedy. I understand that self-medication is very harmful, but at that moment there was simply nothing else left. Taking anise drops really helped a lot, the cough became more wet and not so painful. It helped especially well with night attacks, when my daughter simply wheezed and could not clear her throat. After three days of treatment, changes became visible and we were able to get home. We completed our treatment under the supervision of our doctor, but even she noted the good effect of the treatment. Since then, I always keep a bottle in my medicine cabinet “just in case,” even if it’s better not to come in handy. A big plus is the affordable cost coupled with good efficiency. The downside is that I don’t like the smell a little, but that’s the way it is.”

    Analogues of the drug

    A cough can be cured not only with ammonia-anise drops, but also with similar medications that have a similar composition and therapeutic effect.

    The following drugs are identical drugs.

    1. Anise oil is a colorless liquid with a sweetish taste and pleasant aroma. It is used for inhalation, rubbing and internally. Ether has a complex effect on the body. It is a powerful antiseptic and antispasmodic. The substance copes well with colds, bronchitis, tracheitis, and pneumonia. Anise oil reduces elevated body temperature, normalizes sleep, eliminates cough, and calms the nervous system. This is an inexpensive and effective drug that is used not only in medicine, but also in cosmetology and aromatherapy. In its pure form, anise oil is used for inhalation and the preparation of various potions.
    2. Breast elixir is a herbal remedy for removing pathogenic fluid. It contains anise oil, licorice root extract, and ammonia solution. All these components together have antiviral, expectorant, immunostimulating, anti-inflammatory and regenerating effects. The elixir is prescribed to adults and children for diseases of the respiratory system with viscous, difficult to remove sputum. These include bronchitis, bronchial asthma, laryngitis, pneumonia, tracheitis, tracheobronchitis, influenza, tuberculosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
    3. Children's anise dry mixture is a powder for preparing a solution, created on the basis of natural ingredients. It is offered in glass bottles or paper bags. The drug dissolves easily in water. It contains several medicinal plants: marshmallow root and licorice. Anise oil, sodium bicarbonate, sucrose, ammonium chloride and benzoates are used as additional components. The mixture activates the work of the bronchial glands, makes sputum liquid, and facilitates its evacuation from the respiratory system. The substances that make up the medicine treat dry and wet coughs and prevent inflammatory processes in the respiratory system. The drug is easy to dose. To do this, the powder is diluted with warm boiled water to the desired level in the bottle or in a glass. The dosage corresponds to the age of the child.

    You can overcome any cough with drugs that differ in composition from anise drops, but give a similar therapeutic effect. These include the following antitussive drugs:

    • Ambroxol syrup;
    • Drops "Bronchosan";
    • Bponhipret syrup;
    • Tablets "Mukaltin";
    • Syrup "Pertussin"
    • Herbal mixture "Bronchofit";
    • Tablets and liquid for inhalation "Ingalin";
    • Lorkof syrup;
    • Tablets, tincture, spray "Eccalyptus".

    Directions for use and dosage for cough

    The regimen for taking the drug is standard and is described in the instructions that come with the drug. However, when prescribing anise drops, the doctor can adjust the dosage and dosage regimen taking into account the individual condition of the patient.

    Before ingestion, the drops should be diluted in a small amount of clean boiled water (for an adult (from 14 years old) about 10-15 drops per 1 tbsp). Those who have used this drug are advised to take it together with refined sugar, dripping the solution onto a cube, but the instructions are silent about this use.

    It is dangerous to take the drug in concentrated form, since the alcohol base can cause a burn to the oral mucosa. It is recommended to take the drug 3-4 times a day until lasting improvement. It usually occurs after 7-12 days of treatment.

    Chest cough elixir: instructions for use and interaction with tablets

    Chest cough elixir is a combined drug whose active ingredients are: concentrated thick licorice extract and aqueous ammonia.

    Due to these active ingredients, the elixir helps to liquefy and remove mucus from the lower respiratory tract in infectious and inflammatory diseases.

    The instructions for use will tell you how to use tablets and drops of the breast elixir.

    Indications for use

    The instructions for use, which are in each package of the Chest Elixir, recommend the medicine for diseases of the respiratory tract, accompanied by cough and difficult to separate sputum.

    The drug should be taken for the following diseases:

    • Pharyngitis.
    • Laryngitis.
    • Tracheitis.
    • Obstructive bronchitis.
    • Pneumonia.
    • Chronic and acute bronchitis.
    • Bronchial asthma.
    • Pulmonary tuberculosis.
    • Tracheobronchitis.

    Composition and pharmacological action

    Quantitative ratio of the active components in the Breast Elixir:

    1. licorice extract – 20.7 g;
    2. concentrated ammonia solution 28% – 1.38 g;
    3. anise oil – 0.34 g.

    Auxiliary components of the drug:

    • ethyl alcohol 90 % - 20.41 ml;
    • distilled water – 100 ml.

    The breast elixir has a pronounced expectorant effect due to the pharmacological properties of its constituent components:

    1. Licorice extract provides an anti-inflammatory and expectorant effect, stimulating the activity of the ciliated epithelium of the bronchi and trachea. Strengthens the secretion of the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract.
    2. Due to the content of anethole in anise oil, the drug enhances the secretion of the mucous epithelium of the larynx, bronchi and trachea. Increases the activity of the ciliary layer of the respiratory organs.
    3. Ammonia concentrate has an irritating effect on the sensitive nerve endings of the upper respiratory tract. Stimulates the reflex activity of the respiratory center.

    Dosage and method of administration

    It is recommended for adult patients to take Breast Elixir 3-5 times a day, 30-40 drops.
    According to the instructions, it is recommended to dilute the medicine with a small amount of water. It is possible to take the elixir simultaneously with antibacterial drugs and other medications. But the parallel use of Chest Elixir with other cough medicines is prohibited.

    With such a combination, liquefied sputum is difficult to cough up and remains in the bronchi, which negates the therapeutic effect of the Chest Elixir. The duration of treatment is 7-10 days. If necessary, the doctor may prescribe a repeat course.

    However, if the elixir is used for too long, an overdose may occur. The same thing will happen if the recommended dose is exceeded. Symptoms of overdose are the following:

    • swelling;
    • hypokalemia;
    • increased blood pressure.

    Treatment in case of overdose should be symptomatic.

    Contraindications and side effects

    Despite its natural composition, Breast Elixir has contraindications, as evidenced by the instructions for use of the medicine and reviews from doctors.

    Cough drops are contraindicated in the following cases:

    1. individual hypersensitivity to the components of the drug;
    2. pregnancy and breastfeeding;
    3. bronchial asthma;
    4. gastritis;
    5. exacerbation of peptic ulcer of the stomach and duodenal intestine.

    In addition, drops should be taken with caution to treat the respiratory tract in cases of alcoholism, traumatic brain injury, and pathologies of the brain and liver. For these diseases, it is necessary to strictly adhere to the dosage regimen and dosage.

    During treatment, you should refrain from driving vehicles and other types of dangerous activities related to the maintenance of complex mechanisms and requiring quick response.

    This precaution is due to the fact that the cough medicine contains ethyl alcohol.

    Side effects and interactions with other medications

    Side effects from the Chest Elixir can be expressed by various allergic reactions (body itching, skin rash), about which there are corresponding reviews.
    In some cases, diarrhea and nausea occur. Concomitant use of Chest Elixir with loop and thiazine diuretic tablets increases the risk of developing hypokalemia. A significant decrease in the concentration of potassium in the blood, provoked by long-term use of this drug, can intensify the toxic effects of cardiac glycosides.

    If breast drops are taken concurrently with corticosteroids, there is a possibility that the half-life of cortisol will increase.

    It is not recommended to simultaneously take Chest Elixir with medications that help reduce sputum production and cough medications with central and peripheral effects. Additionally, you can take herbal cough syrup.

    This is due to the fact that the latter, by suppressing the cough reflex, help slow down the release of mucous contents from the airways, worsen the aerodynamics of the respiratory tract and the processes of oxygenation of the lungs.

    The same exact effect can be observed when taking a cough elixir and antibacterial drugs simultaneously.

    The elixir should not be prescribed in combination with Amiloride and Spironolactone. Concomitant use with antiarrhythmic drugs (Quinidine, Procainomide) increases the risk of developing severe ventricular tachycardia and hypokalemia.

    To purchase Breast Elixir at a pharmacy, the patient does not need a prescription from a doctor. However, this does not mean that a doctor’s consultation is also not required. In any case, visiting a medical facility if a cough occurs is mandatory.

    This precaution is due to the fact that cough has a different nature and may indicate the presence of very serious diseases in the body, for example, pneumonia or pulmonary tuberculosis.

    The drug should be stored in a dark, cool place, protected from children, for no more than 24 months from the date of release.

    What is important to know when treating with Breast Elixir

    • Since the Chest Elixir has a pronounced laxative effect, it is recommended to use it with caution in the presence of diarrhea.
    • When treated with this drug, sodium excretion decreases, but potassium concentration, on the contrary, increases, which leads to an increase in blood pressure.
    • With long-term use, especially in large doses, there is a high probability of increased accumulation of water in the body, which is manifested by swelling of the hands and feet.
    • You should not take Breast Elixir in combination with drugs that can provoke a laxative effect or with other drugs that increase electrolyte imbalance.
    • Patients taking licorice root preparations should not take other medications that also contain this component. Otherwise, serious side effects may occur: heart rhythm disturbances, hypokalemia.
    • You should not take breast drops at the same time as corticosteroids.

    It is very important to know: people with pathologies of the kidneys, liver, hypertension and cardiovascular diseases should take licorice preparations with great caution.
    Patients with hypokalemia have an individual increased sensitivity to the negative manifestations of licorice, so they should either refrain from treatment with the Chest Elixir or take it in limited doses.

    When the first undesirable symptoms appear, treatment with the drug should be stopped immediately and consult a doctor, who may prescribe another drug, for example, cough drops.

    Advice: before starting treatment, you must carefully study the instructions that come with the elixir bottle.

    The price of the drug varies depending on the region and the manufacturer.

    The average price of a 25 ml bottle is 16-20 rubles.

    A prescription is not required to purchase cough medicine. The video in this article is intended to reinforce information about cough and how to treat it.

    Home remedy for cough

    To eliminate any type of cough at home, it is easy to prepare an inexpensive and fairly strong preparation based on anise and ammonia, which will clear the respiratory system of pathogenic secretions in a short time. To prepare a herbal remedy, you can use the following recipe:

    • Two main ingredients are prepared: ammonia-anise drops and cough tablets from thermopsis grass, which are often used in childhood. The plant belongs to the group of expectorants, therefore it is used to treat ailments with an unproductive and wet cough.
    • Two thermopsis tablets are ground into powder and poured into a special container.
    • Add 2 tablespoons of boiling water and a dessert spoon of drops to the resulting mass.
    • The medicine is drunk three times a day half an hour before meals. It is advisable that the last dose be two hours before bedtime.

    A chest elixir and cough tablets based on thermopsis and soda effectively relieve wheezing. The natural remedy enhances the secretion of mucus directly on the bronchial tree and promotes its rapid removal from the body. The medicine is prepared according to the recipe described above and taken three times a day for a week.

    No less useful is the recipe for mixing anise drops with Mukaltin tablets, which contain marshmallow root.

    During treatment with thermopsis drugs, you need to drink a lot of fluid: for an adult - at least 2.5 ml per day.

    special instructions

    Since the drug is produced on the basis of ethyl alcohol (0.18 g of the substance in the maximum single dosage, 0.54 g in the maximum daily dosage), it affects the speed of psychomotor reactions. Driving vehicles and performing activities that require attention may but with caution.

    Ammonia-anise cough drops: how to take, instructions for use. How to drink for children and adults

    Among modern tablets, drops and antitussive syrups, ammonia-anise drops occupy their rightful place. They are effective and low cost, do not contain preservatives and dyes, like most syrups. According to the instructions, they can be taken even by children and during pregnancy.

    Indications for the use of anise drops

    Most often they are prescribed for coughs due to infectious diseases of the respiratory tract. Their most effective use is for dry cough. Treatment with ammonia-anise drops is allowed at any stage of the disease, during which sputum discharge is difficult. Their use at the first signs of the disease can to some extent prevent severe inflammation of the mucous membranes of the throat. Sometimes timely treatment can prevent the development of infection.

    Main indications:

    • bronchitis is an infectious disease of the bronchi, characterized by the accumulation of mucus in the bronchioles;
    • tracheitis - inflammation of the trachea, the main symptom is a strong, paroxysmal cough;
    • pharyngitis is an acute disease accompanied by inflammation of the tissues of the pharynx;
    • whooping cough is an infectious disease of the respiratory system;
    • laryngitis - inflammatory processes of the mucous membranes of the larynx, often the result of a long course of viral diseases;
    • bronchogenic pneumonia - acute inflammation of the walls of the bronchioles.

    Alternative uses

    Drops improve the digestion process

    Anise drops can also be used for other diseases accompanied by a dry cough. The latter most often occurs in the initial stages of the disease. This is due to irritation and inflammation of the throat mucosa; coughing in this case is a natural reflex to try to eliminate the cause of the sore throat. Subsequently, under the influence of anise oil, the sputum begins to disappear. After its complete disappearance, recovery begins.

    Additionally, ammonia-anise drops have a positive effect on the gastrointestinal tract. With their help, the digestion process is improved, bloating is eliminated, and the secretory activity of the stomach is restored. The latter property is a contraindication to their use for peptic ulcers and some forms of gastritis.
