Review of effective sprays for sinusitis (sinusitis) and runny nose

Sprays for sinusitis are prescribed as part of complex treatment of the disease; such medications help to quickly alleviate the patient’s well-being.

The use of local agents often acts as an alternative to puncture. The doctor may recommend the use of a spray with antibacterial, antiallergic, and anti-inflammatory properties.

The active substances act locally and help reduce swelling, accelerate the removal of pus, and normalize breathing.

Sprays for sinusitis are not used if there is intolerance to active substances or increased intraocular pressure. This dosage form is not recommended for young children due to the risk of developing laryngospasms.

Before starting to use any drug, you should always consult your doctor.

Types of sprays and in what cases they are used

The drugs are classified as follows:

  • Sprays for sinusitis on a hormonal basis, eliminating inflammation.
  • Moisturizers.
  • Medicines with antibacterial and antiviral properties.
  • Drugs that reduce mucus and speed up the process of its removal.
  • antihistamines.

Before starting to use the spray, it is recommended that you familiarize yourself with the benefits of this dosage form and why it is prescribed.

Indications for useBenefits of sprays
  • Pain in the nasal passages.
  • Feeling of squeezing inside the maxillary sinuses.
  • The development of inflammatory processes and pain in the area of the accessory sinuses.
  • Intense nasal discharge, swelling of mucous tissues.
  • More convenient than dosage forms in the form of drops.
  • Thanks to the uniform dispersion of the active substance, the effect occurs faster.
  • Using a convenient dispenser, the exact amount of active substance enters the nasal passages, which reduces the likelihood of an overdose.

Treatment of sinusitis requires an integrated approach. Sprays are used as part of multicomponent therapy along with drugs from other pharmacological groups recommended by a doctor.

The use of sprays in the treatment and prevention of sinusitis

spray for sinusitis
A properly selected nasal spray for sinusitis of any shape is easily sprayed into a cleansed nasal cavity. It allows you to have a selective effect on the area affected by the infection. This is an auxiliary type of therapy, which is used as part of a complex treatment of sinusitis. To effectively treat purulent sinusitis, it is not enough to use only one spray. You should be examined by a doctor and receive a prescription with a recommendation for a proven remedy that will combine well with other drugs and effectively treat sinusitis. The spray can have different effects and have a number of side effects. Therefore, only a doctor can prescribe the most suitable type of such external remedy.

Sprays can always be bought at the pharmacy. They are inexpensive, but show a good therapeutic effect. Pharmacies offer a wide range of external medications for the treatment of sinusitis. By choosing, on the recommendation of your attending physician, a suitable spray for acute sinusitis, you can alleviate the symptoms of this disease.

Antibacterial

An anti-sinusitis spray with an antibiotic is used when complications develop and infectious pathogens are attached.

Isofra

A drug with a bactericidal effect based on the antibiotic framycetin from the aminoglycoside group. Used for infectious and inflammatory diseases of the respiratory tract.

Mode of application
  • Adults: 1 spray in each nostril up to 6 times a day.
  • Children from 12 months: 1 injection up to 3 times a day.
Features of use
  • The spray can be prescribed only if the walls of the sinuses are not damaged.
  • Isofra should not be used to rinse the paranasal sinuses.
  • If after 7 days the expected effect is not present, stop using the spray and consult a doctor.
Portability The drug is well tolerated. In rare cases, allergies have been reported: urticaria, itching.

Isofra is not used in cases of individual intolerance to aminoglycoside antibiotics or in the treatment of patients under 1 year of age.

Side effects

Treatment with Nasobek may be accompanied by undesirable effects, although in most cases the drug is well tolerated.

May occur:

  • allergic reactions, up to Quincke's edema,
  • disturbances in the sense of smell and taste,
  • increased intraocular pressure,
  • blurred vision,
  • increased drowsiness,
  • sneezing,
  • dry nose,
  • dizziness,
  • candidiasis of ENT organs,
  • cough,
  • headache,
  • myalgia,
  • nosebleeds,
  • violation of the integrity of the nasal septum,
  • deterioration in children's growth.

Antiviral aerosols

If sinusitis is caused by a viral infection, then medications with antiviral effects are recommended. The most popular representatives of this group are “Nazoferon”, “Genferon light”, “Laferon”.

Laferon-nasal

Laferon is a medicine with a direct antiviral effect based on recombinant interferon. To achieve the best results, you must start using the drug as early as possible.

The duration of treatment should not exceed 5 days. The medication should not be combined with drugs from the corticosteroid group.

During treatment you should also refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages.

How to use the inhaler?

If you just bought Nasobek, before treatment you should remove the special half-ring, which protects the package with the drug from accidental opening. Then you need to “start” the mechanism that sprays the medicine. To do this, just press the dispenser 1-2 times. After this, you can begin the procedure.

Make sure your nasal passages are completely clear. This is very important: otherwise the effectiveness of the drug will be significantly reduced. If necessary, place vasoconstrictor drops into the nose. After breathing has been restored, you need to exhale the air and close one nasal passage with your finger and insert the applicator into the second, free nasal passage. Tilt your head so that the bottle of medicine is located in a perpendicular position. Press the plunger and inhale at the same time. Exhale through your mouth.

We advise you to study: Xylometazoline - a lightning-fast assistant for nasal congestion

Repeat the procedure with the opposite nasal passage.

Moisturizing

Nasal sprays for sinusitis with a moisturizing effect combat dryness, burning, irritation - common symptoms that occur during long-term use of other nasal medications.

The active substances are isotonic or hypertonic salt water solutions.

The list of medications includes the following names:

  • "Morenazole";
  • "No-Sol";
  • "Humer";
  • "Aqua Maris" and inexpensive analogues;
  • "Marimer";
  • "Quix".

Such drugs are well tolerated and are used in the treatment of pregnant women and young children.

Humer

Contains isotonic sterile sea water, helps combat dry mucous membranes, and helps ease breathing.

"Humer" is recommended as part of complex treatment regimens for exacerbations of chronic diseases of the nasopharynx and paranasal sinuses.

It is necessary to take into account the features of using the product:

  • before use, you should clear the nasal passages, in case of congestion, instill vasoconstrictor drops and wait until the swelling subsides;
  • tilt your head to the side and inject the drug into the nostril, which is located above;
  • After using the solution, blow your nose again.

To achieve the best result, it is recommended to use the drug before the main meal.

"Humer" is well tolerated by patients, but adverse reactions such as hyperemia (redness) and minor allergic manifestations have been reported.

Use of the drug Nasobek for sinusitis

Increasingly, topical hormonal medications are being included in the treatment regimen for sinusitis. This is explained by their ability to quickly and permanently eliminate swelling of the nasal mucosa, which alleviates the patient’s general condition and increases the effectiveness of treatment.

Nasobek spray is used quite often for sinusitis. Among all representatives of corticosteroid drugs for the nose, it is distinguished by its effectiveness and relatively affordable price.

After all, a bottle containing 200 doses of medicine costs about the same as a bottle for 60-140 doses of other hormonal sprays.

Features of the composition and release form

Nasobek is produced by the Czech pharmaceutical company Ivax Pharmaceuticals in the form of a metered spray.

The active component of Nasobek is beclomethasone dipropionate. Each spray dose contains 50 micrograms. In addition, the drug also contains excipients: MCC, purified water, benzalkonium chloride, hydrochloric acid, polysorbate 80, phenylethanol, sodium cocarboxymethylcellulose.

A carefully developed composition and spray form ensures an accurate dosage of the hormonal drug. At the same time, there is no systemic effect of the corticosteroid on the body when used in recommended doses.

Characteristics of action

Due to the presence of beclomethasone dipropionate in the composition, Nasobek has the following properties:

  • anti-inflammatory,
  • antiallergic,
  • decongestants,
  • immunosuppressive.

The active substance is a synthetic glucocorticosteroid for topical use. Beclomethasone activates the production of lipomodulin, which inhibits the formation of arachidonic acid. The substance also reduces the production of lymphokines and inflammatory exudation.

Under the influence of the drug, the migration of macrophages slows down, which reduces the intensity of the processes of granulation and infiltration.

After using the spray, the amount of mucus produced decreases, swelling is eliminated and mucociliary transport is enhanced.

It should be noted that the effect of the drug does not become pronounced immediately after the first use, but after several days of use.

Indications of the drug

Nasobek is prescribed for the treatment of vasomotor and allergic forms of rhinitis.

Why is it prescribed for sinusitis?

To understand the reason for prescribing a remedy for sinusitis, it is enough to familiarize yourself with its actions. Nasobek is able to eliminate swelling of the mucous membrane, reduce the manifestations of the inflammatory process and activate the outflow of mucus from the nasal cavities.

All these symptoms significantly complicate the patient’s life and worsen his general condition. By eliminating them, you can not only improve your quality of life, but also speed up your recovery.

Indeed, by facilitating the passage of mucus and pus from the sinuses, it is possible to quickly achieve their sterility and get rid of the disease.

It is important to understand that using Nasobek alone cannot cure sinusitis. The drug is effective only as part of a complex treatment of sinus inflammation, which includes the use of drugs aimed at eliminating the cause of the disease.

Application of medicine

Since the drug is a hormonal drug, it can only be prescribed by a doctor if there are appropriate indications. The dose of the drug is set individually and can be changed during treatment, depending on the effectiveness demonstrated.

The drug is used only intranasally. Before irrigating your nose with Nasobek, you should clean your nasal passages using any saline drops or spray. During injection, you must tilt your head slightly and inhale at the same time so that the drug penetrates as deeply as possible. The nasal passage, which is not irrigated, is pinched with a finger at this time. After injection, you must exhale through your mouth.

Before first use, you need to press the dispenser several times until the first aerosol spray appears. After each use, clean the applicator spout with a dry cloth or cloth. And at least once a week you should wash it with water.

Contraindications

Nasobek has a fairly large list of contraindications and restrictions on use due to the glucocorticosteroid content in its composition.

It is prohibited to use the spray for treatment when:

  • hypersensitivity to any component of the drug,
  • viral and fungal nature of the disease,
  • frequent nosebleeds,
  • tuberculosis of the respiratory system,
  • hemorrhagic diathesis.

The drug is also not prescribed in the 1st trimester of pregnancy and in children under 6 years of age.

Particular care is taken if the patient has:

  • glaucoma,
  • hypothyroidism,
  • amoebiasis,
  • recent operations in the nasal cavities,
  • history of myocardial infarction,
  • severe liver failure,
  • 2-3 trimesters of pregnancy,
  • during breastfeeding.

Side effects

Treatment with Nasobek may be accompanied by undesirable effects, although in most cases the drug is well tolerated.

May occur:

  • allergic reactions, up to Quincke's edema,
  • disturbances in the sense of smell and taste,
  • increased intraocular pressure,
  • blurred vision,
  • increased drowsiness,
  • sneezing,
  • dry nose,
  • dizziness,
  • candidiasis of ENT organs,
  • cough,
  • headache,
  • myalgia,
  • nosebleeds,
  • violation of the integrity of the nasal septum,
  • deterioration in children's growth.

Use in special patient groups

The first trimester of pregnancy is an absolute contraindication to the use of Nasobek. In the 2nd and 3rd trimester, it is possible to use the drug under medical supervision.

If it is necessary to receive Nasobek therapy, breastfeeding should be stopped.

In pediatrics, the medicine is not used until 6 years of age, and treatment of older children is carried out with constant monitoring of their growth. This is due to the drug’s ability to reduce growth rates and reduce bone mineral density with long-term use.

No dose adjustment is required for elderly patients unless they have other contraindications.

Drivers should refrain from driving immediately after using the spray due to the risk of drowsiness and dizziness.

Overdose

With prolonged continuous use of the drug in high doses, symptoms of overdose in the form of hypercortisolism are likely to occur. In such cases, it is impossible to abruptly cancel Nasobek. Its dose should be gradually reduced until complete withdrawal.

Mucolytics

Mucolytics thin out viscous mucus and speed up the process of its elimination. They are considering the possibility of using “Rinofluimucil”, “Sinuforte”, “Fluimucil”.

To achieve better results, combine local dosage forms with oral ones (powders, tablets).

Sinuforte

A herbal aerosol, which enhances secretion and accelerates the process of mucus removal, reducing swelling. The active substances act on the trigeminal nerve and, due to the irritating effect, a reflex removal of purulent mucous contents occurs.

Microcirculation also increases, and an anti-edematous effect is observed. Sinuforte is approved for use in patients over 5 years of age.

The average duration of treatment is 2 weeks. If necessary, the course is repeated after 7 days on the recommendation of a doctor.

Vasoconstrictors

Another name for decongestants. Helps relieve congestion, ease breathing, and remove accumulated mucus.

Not intended for long-term use. Such drugs have a short-term, medium or prolonged effect, depending on what active substance is included in their composition.

Short-acting drugs (up to 240 minutes) can cause dry mucous membranes The use of drugs containing naphazoline is indicated:
  • "Naphthyzina";
  • "Sanorina".
Average duration of action (up to 5.5 hours) – have a milder effect, better tolerated by patients Use of products containing xylometazoline:
  • "Xymelina";

  • "Rinomarima";
  • "Tizina."
Long-acting drugs Application shown:
  • "Nazivina";
  • "Nazola";
  • "Knoxpreya."

Drugs with a vasoconstrictor effect can provoke adverse reactions such as dry mucous membranes, nosebleeds, and fluctuations in blood pressure.

Before starting use, you must carefully study the instructions: most medications are not recommended for pregnant women or patients with high blood pressure.

Knoxprey

A decongestant based on oxymetazoline, which has a local vasoconstrictor effect 7-9 minutes after using the spray.

The pharmacological effect lasts up to 12 hours. Noxprey reduces the intensity of exudation, eliminates irritation, and restores nasal patency.

You should not use Noxprey for more than 1 week. For atrophic rhinitis, angle-closure glaucoma, and intolerance to the active substance, do not use the drug.

In pharmacies you can buy Noxprey in dosages for adults and children.

The drug should not be used simultaneously with other drugs that have a local vasoconstrictor effect, medications from the group of antidepressants.

Oxymetazoline is combined with food and alcoholic beverages.

Sprays for sinusitis based on antibiotics

In some cases, against the background of sinusitis, it may be necessary to use sprays that contain an antibiotic. Nasal agents have a significant advantage over antibiotics that have a broad spectrum of action - they have a slight negative effect on the entire body. Medicines in this group are prescribed for acute and chronic bacterial sinusitis.

Important! Antibiotic-based drugs help relieve the inflammatory process, reduce the volume of purulent mucous secretions, and lower the temperature by directly affecting the source of the problem.

Most often, the following nasal medications are prescribed for sinusitis:

  • Polydexa is a complex medicine with antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and vasoconstrictor properties. Prescribed as an independent remedy or in complex treatment. Can be used by both adults and children over 2.5 years old. The active ingredients in the drug are neomycin sulfate, phenylephrine, polymyxin B sulfate, dexamethasone;
  • Bioparox is the active substance in the spray - fusafungin. The medicine has an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effect. Indicated for the treatment of adults and children starting from 2.5 years.
  • Isofra - the active ingredient in the spray is represented by framycetin. Has a pronounced antimicrobial effect. Used in the complex treatment of sinusitis. The medicine is indicated for use in children over one year of age.

Corticosteroids

Active corticosteroid substances have a pronounced anti-inflammatory effect and begin to act 24-48 hours after the start of using the aerosol.

Hormonal substances are prescribed to eliminate polypous or allergic forms of the disease.

Nasonex

The active component is mometasone, which inhibits (reduces the rate) the release of inflammatory mediators.

The spray is used for exacerbation of chronic sinusitis, in combination with antibacterial drugs.

The dosage regimen is 2 sprays into each nostril twice a day, for patients over 12 years of age and adults. Prolonged use of Nasonex can lead to an overdose, which manifests itself in the form of inhibition of the functions of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal systems.

The drug acts locally. If the recommendations regarding the dosage regimen are strictly followed, the active substance does not penetrate into the general bloodstream and does not have a negative effect on the functioning and condition of internal organs.

Most often, such drugs cause dry mucous membranes and the development of nosebleeds. For prevention, it is recommended to use hormonal sprays together with moisturizers. You can also choose inexpensive but effective analogues of Nasonex.

Moisturizing sprays

For a long time it was believed that when the nasal mucosa is inflamed, it needs to be dried out. Recently, doctors have come to the conclusion that it is necessary to use, on the contrary, gentle moisturizers. All such nasal sprays have a similar composition - as a rule, it is an isotonic solution of sea salt with a certain concentration. Moisturizers help flush out excess mucus from the sinuses and neutralize the negative effects of vasoconstrictors or hormonal medications.

Afrin Moisturizing

Afrin Moisturizing drug

The drug is a vasoconstrictor. Unlike other moisturizers, Afrin does not contain a salt solution, but the substance oxymetazoline. To preserve moisture, the spray contains excipients - macrogol and glycerol. Before using the medicine, you should consult your doctor and read the instructions, since there are a number of contraindications and side effects. Afrin Moisturizing cannot be used during pregnancy, lactation and children under 6 years of age. The average price is about 200 rubles.

Morenasal

The drug Morenasal

The spray is a mixture of sodium, calcium, potassium and other substances in injection water. Morenazal has an anti-inflammatory effect, enhances the resistance properties of the epithelium of the nasal mucosa to the effects of pathogens. Allergic manifestations are possible as side effects. Morenasal can be used repeatedly to thin and completely remove nasal secretions. The average price is about 280 rubles.

Marimer

Marimer solution

The medicine contains a solution of sea salt. The drug maintains the mucous membrane in a physiological state, thins and removes mucus. With allergic rhinitis, the allergens that cause the pathology are released. Marimer increases local immunity, restores the ciliary layer in areas of damage. The average price is about 170 rubles.

Combined action

Such drugs contain several active components that provide a complex pharmacological effect.

Polydexa with phenylephrine

Polydexa is a polycompound spray for the treatment of sinusitis based on antibiotics (neomycin and polymyxin), a corticosteroid (dexamethasone), and phenylephrine.

It has a pronounced anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effect.

Phenylephrine helps relieve nasal congestion and excessive discharge.

The combination of several antibiotics at once expands the spectrum of antibacterial activity and makes it possible to influence gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms that provoke an infectious-inflammatory process.

  • Patients 2.5-15 years old: 1 injection up to 3 times a day.
  • Adults: recommended 1 spray into each nasal passage up to 5 times a day.
  • The course of treatment is no longer than 10 days.

It is recommended to avoid using the drug in case of viral diseases, kidney dysfunction, during pregnancy, with closed-angle glaucoma, and in childhood. In rare cases, allergic reactions are possible.

Vibrocil

It has a complex effect thanks to phenylephrine and dimethindene maleate, which restore nasal breathing and demonstrate antiallergic properties.

The drug is used from 6 years of age under medical supervision. In order to minimize the likelihood of developing adverse reactions, the spray should not be used for more than 1 week.

Rinofluimucil

Rinofluimucil combines anti-inflammatory, mucolytic, antioxidant properties, reduces swelling and hyperemia.

For patients over 6 years old, it is recommended to take 1-2 injections into each nasal passage up to 3 times a day. The duration of treatment is no more than 7 days.

Undesirable manifestations are possible in the form of dry mucous membranes, increased heart rate, allergic reactions, and stimulating effects on the central nervous system.

The drug should not be used simultaneously with MAO inhibitors, pregnant women, patients with closed-angle glaucoma, allergic reactions, thyroid dysfunction.

You will find analogues of Rinofluimucil with the same effect, but cheaper than the original, in this article.

Other sprays for the treatment of sinusitis

Sprays for the treatment of sinusitis, presented on the pharmaceutical market, have a different mechanism of action, duration of the effect, and a list of contraindications. In the absence of a doctor’s prescription, in order to decide on a choice among the many names, you can rely on patient reviews about the price-efficiency-tolerability ratio.

Vasoconstrictor sprays

Decongestants, or vasoconstrictors, are α-adrenergic receptor stimulants that help reduce swelling of the nasal mucosa. Their action is also aimed at suppressing mucus secretion. Decongestants provide sinus drainage, restoring nasal breathing. Often prescribed drugs based on oxymetazoline - Noxprey, Nazivin, Nazospray, Nazol, Afrin, and xylometazoline - Galazolin, Dlynos, Xymelin, Otrivin.

In the treatment of sinusitis, vasoconstrictor sprays are used
In the treatment of sinusitis, vasoconstrictor sprays are used

The duration of the course of use of these drugs is limited, since decongestants are addictive. Long-term therapy leads to thinning of the nasal mucosa, which increases susceptibility to ARVI (acute respiratory viral infections).

Glucocorticoids

The most commonly used sprays for the treatment of sinusitis include Nasonex, Avamis, Flixonase. These are medications based on fluticasone, a synthetic glucocorticosteroid that has anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects.

Seawater sprays safely cleanse the nasal passages, restore breathing and destroy pathogenic microorganisms.

Drugs from this group relieve swelling and eliminate hyperemia. Sinus drainage is ensured by reducing swelling.

Antihistamines and combination drugs

Rinofluimucil is a combination spray against sinusitis. It includes:

  • acetylcysteine: the action is aimed at thinning mucous and purulent-mucosal secretions; also has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties;
  • tuaminoheptane: a sympathomimetic with a mild vasoconstrictor effect; the substance does not cause excessive dryness of the mucous membrane and minimizes the likelihood of drug-induced rhinitis.

Rinofluimucil is a combination drug with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and mild vasoconstrictor effects.
Rinofluimucil is a combination drug with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and mild vasoconstrictor effects.

The main advantage of the drug is considered to be the ability to have a therapeutic effect on the surface of the mucous membrane, thin and reduce the viscosity of mucus, and provide productive physiological cleansing of the paranasal sinuses.

Allergodil spray is highly effective. Its active substance, azelastine, is a blocker of H1-histamine receptors. The drug should be used for allergic etiology of the disease.

The combined drug Vibrocil has a vasoconstrictor and antiallergic effect. Its effect is ensured thanks to the properties of the active components:

  • phenylephrine: is a sympathomimetic that has a moderate vasoconstrictor effect; helps eliminate swelling of the nasal mucosa and paranasal sinuses;
  • Dimetindene: antiallergic drug (histamine H1 receptor antagonist); the activity of the ciliated epithelium of the nasal mucosa does not decrease.

Herbal preparations

One of the best sprays for the treatment of sinusitis, according to reviews, is Sinuforte, a drug based on cyclamen root. The active substance acts on the sensitive receptors of the trigeminal nerve in the area of the middle nasal passage, which leads to reflex secretion in the mucous membrane of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. This improves the rheological properties of the secretion and normalizes its viscosity.

Sinuforte is considered one of the best and safest herbal drugs
Sinuforte is considered one of the best and safest herbal drugs

Reflex hypersecretion in combination with an anti-edematous effect makes it possible to facilitate the evacuation of secretions from the sinuses into the nasopharynx.

The recommended duration of therapy is 6–8 or 12–16 days (when used daily or every other day, respectively).

Sprays based on sea salt (water)

Seawater sprays safely cleanse the nasal passages, restore breathing and destroy pathogenic microorganisms.

Sprays containing sea water effectively moisturize the nasal mucosa and practically do not lead to the development of side effects
Sprays containing sea water effectively moisturize the nasal mucosa and practically do not lead to the development of side effects

The use of this group of drugs allows you to achieve the following goals:

  • normalization of nasal mucus secretion, which is ensured by stimulation of goblet cells;
  • restoration and maintenance of the physiological state, as well as moisturizing the mucous membrane of the nasopharynx;
  • increasing the resistance of the epithelium to the effects of pathogenic microorganisms;
  • acceleration of regeneration of damaged areas of the nasal mucosa;
  • diluting viscous mucus and removing stagnant secretions.

Most drugs on the pharmaceutical market contain ocean or sea water. These include: Marimer, Aqua Maris, Morenasal, Physiomer and others. They have virtually no contraindications and do not lead to the development of adverse reactions.
