Treatment with essential oils for cough

Everyone has experienced what a cough is. Painful attacks, sleepless nights, and sometimes pain in the throat or chest force one to go to great lengths in order to recover as quickly as possible. But treatment is not always bitter medicine and painful procedures. The path to recovery can be very pleasant, and aromatherapy once again proves this. Essential oils act gently and gently when coughing, and their pleasant healing aromas will delight and even protect the health of household members.

To defeat a cough, you need to choose exactly those essential oils that have a number of properties:

  • antiviral, bactericidal (will destroy pathogenic microbes);
  • anti-inflammatory (relieves inflammation, speeds up the healing process);
  • expectorant (helps in the removal of sputum);
  • disinfectant (will protect other family members from airborne infection).

In addition to these properties, some essential oils can reduce pain and normalize lung function. The most suitable oils for fighting cough are pine, eucalyptus, fir, lavender, chamomile, thyme, and tea tree oils.

Ways to treat cough with essential oils

There are several options for how to get rid of a cough using the right aroma oil. This includes massage, compresses, baths, and inhalations (cold and hot).

Massage

For greater effect, it would be good to mix lavender, tea tree and eucalyptus essential oils (2 drops each) with a tablespoon of any base oil. Rub the resulting mixture with massaging movements into the upper back and chest area. After this, bandage the rubbed areas with a warm scarf and cover yourself with a blanket.

Before going to bed, a massage using rosemary and eucalyptus will help. These ingredients will provide a double sedative effect, promoting sleep and reducing coughing attacks.

Compresses

In addition to massage, compresses help a lot, this is especially useful for children. Essential oil should be mixed with olive oil, this mixture should be combined with grated potatoes or honey and applied to the upper back or chest. Leave the compress on for half an hour, then stay warm, preferably under a blanket.

Before using essential oils in the treatment of children, it is imperative to consult a doctor, since not all esters can be used in children.

Aroma baths

A very useful pre-bedtime procedure for children. The water should be a tolerable temperature for the child, on average it is 34–38 degrees. Add 50 grams of sea salt and a few drops of eucalyptus, sage, and thyme to the water. Such baths provide good relief for the general condition, and the evaporating medicinal aromas will relieve an attack. Please note that it is forbidden to take a bath if you have an elevated body temperature.

Inhalations

This is the most common type of aromatherapy treatment for cough. Inhalations are divided into hot and cold.

Cold inhalations are carried out using a nebulizer. To do this, you will need saline solution (2 ml), 10 drops of eucalyptus (for children - 5 drops). Such inhalations should be performed every 4–5 hours, 3 or 4 times a day.

Hot inhalations are the most common. On average, for this you need a liter of hot water and an aroma oil of your choice. For children, the ideal effect would be lavender or chamomile (1 drop), for older children, from 7 years old, a combination of eucalyptus + chamomile or tea tree + eucalyptus, also 1 drop, is possible.

The same combinations will help adults, but 3 drops of oils each.

If it is possible to carry out inhalation in a bathhouse or sauna, this would be an ideal option. Simultaneous inhalation of essential oil fumes from the heater and general warming will bring great benefits. But this cannot be done at elevated temperatures.

During such procedures, along with a cough, you can get rid of a runny nose. Alternately inhaling the vapors through your mouth and nose will provide a double effect on both cold symptoms at once. Once on the nasal mucosa, esters relieve swelling and make it possible to breathe.

Instead of inhalation during a runny nose, you can simply sniff an open bottle, or you can drop a mixture of oils into your nose: 3 drops of thyme per 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil with 1-2 drops instilled into the nostril three times a day - and the effect will please you very soon.

Essential oils for coughs for children and adults - we treat it correctly!

There are several most popular methods of treating cough with essential oils, used for both children and adults. And no matter what method you use, they have the same essence - it is alleviation of pain during coughing attacks, mitigation of the sensation of soreness in the throat and chest, intensive removal of cough sputum in the form of a mucous substance.

Inhalation

Inhalation with essential oils for coughs is an ancient and popular method of inhaling medicinal solutions, which is the most common and accessible, and is divided into hot and cold inhalations.

Hot inhalation uses steam from boiling water mixed with essential oils. The temperature of the medicinal solution should be sufficient for vaporization, but not scalding. For 1 liter of hot water, add 3-10 drops of essential oil (can be different), the procedure is carried out in the daytime 2-3 times, after 5-8 hours.

Cold inhalations are carried out using special inhalation devices (nebulizers), which spray a saline solution with the addition of ether-containing substances per 2 ml of water - 5 drops for children's dosage, 10 drops for adults. Procedures are carried out approximately 3-5 times a day, every 4-5 hours.

Compress

A fairly simple and common method among the population used in the treatment of cough. It is suitable for any age, both children and older people. In this case, the essential oil is mixed with various ingredients (for example, grated potatoes, honey). The porridge-like mixture is applied to the chest, throat, back, depending on the source of the disease, and kept for 30-60 minutes, after which it is necessary to wrap up warmly.

Rubbing (rubbing)

essential oil for cough

In such cases, medicinal drops are added to softened Vaseline or skin cream and mixed thoroughly until smooth; alcohol-based solutions can also be used. The surface of the chest and back is subjected to intense rubbing. Rubbing is carried out in a similar way. This method is very close to massage.

Massage

Massage procedures using saline solutions with essential oils are a very effective way to get rid of cough. However, it is not used often, since it requires at least a semi-professional massage therapist. For an effective massage, you need to mix, for example, two drops each of eucalyptus, tea tree, lavender with a spoon of massage oil. The resulting mixture is lightly rubbed into the upper body, chest or back for 10-20 minutes. After the procedure, you should wrap yourself well in a warm blanket.

Aroma baths

To combat a cough, scented baths with the addition of a few drops of eucalyptus or pine oil (can be combined) will be a good help. Sea salt and plant extracts can act as an aromatic substance, although essential oil additives can also be dripped into clean water. You need to take a bath for about 15 minutes, then go to bed.

Informative: as an option, you can use essential oil supplements in a bath or sauna. By adding a few healing drops of pine oil to your steam water, you will immediately feel relief in your respiratory tract. In this case, inhalation and aromatherapy are combined, which naturally increases the effectiveness of treatment.

Disinfection of premises with essential oils

Essential oils are often used to disinfect public spaces where other people may be present. To carry out the disinfection procedure, it is enough to add a certain amount of oils to a container with very hot water and place it in the desired room. Half an hour is enough for a small room to be cleared of pathogenic microbes.

Disinfection of premises with essential oils

In large rooms, special devices are used, for example, an aroma lamp, with the help of which small particles of disinfectants are sprayed into the air, which helps protect the people present from any respiratory infections.

Room treatment

The aromas spreading throughout the room can not only help treat the patient, but also protect family members who are not yet sick from infection. Since many ethers have a disinfectant effect, you can spray them directly from a spray bottle by mixing 3-5 drops with water. An aroma lamp will also come in handy: under the influence of its heat, aromas will fill the air in the room.

The invaluable help of essential oils has been known for a long time. In the case of cough, eucalyptus and conifers are considered especially effective. These oils simultaneously combine everything necessary so that with their help you can overcome the disease. But, despite the fact that they are not medications, a doctor’s advice regarding their use is still necessary not only for children, but also for adults in order to avoid swelling of the bronchi or breathing problems, as well as allergic reactions.

Inhalation is a popular and effective method of treating colds, bronchitis and pneumonia. In addition to medications used in nebulizers, many patients often resort to the use of essential oils. Indeed, inhalations with these substances quickly relieve swelling of the mucous membranes and help improve health. In this article we will tell you how to properly do inhalations with essential oils.

How is the procedure performed?

Many children receive steam inhalations. This is exactly how our grandmothers treated us. Usually water was poured into the pan and brought to a boil. Medicinal herbs were placed in boiling water. Fir needles, sage, lemon balm and chamomile were very popular. It was necessary to be patient in order to withstand the procedure, because sitting for 10 minutes over a pan with hot steam under a blanket or towel is not at all easy.

Now the manipulation has been simplified, because few people use herbs; they have been replaced by extracts from medicinal plants and essential oils. It is enough to drop a few drops of the substance into boiling water and breathe in the vapor. In addition, steam inhalers appeared on sale, which made the procedure safe.

Indications for use of a steam inhaler with essential oils

Inhalation with a steam inhaler should not be done at high temperatures. In this case, use an ultrasonic or compressor nebulizer. Before you inhale, consult a doctor. Let him find out the cause and nature of the cough. If you cough due to allergies, inhaling essential oils may make the situation worse. In addition, such inhalations are prescribed with caution for dry cough. Only if the doctor has diagnosed bronchitis and there are difficulties with removing mucus, inhalations with oils can be done.

About inhalations in general

Otorhinolaryngologists pay attention to the presence of two types of inhalations: cold and hot . Speaking about the first type, they note that this is rather aromatherapy, namely the inhalation of one or another type of essential oil at temperatures that are close to the environment.   • inflammatory processes with purulent discharge;
  • heart diseases;
  • chronic allergic reactions and individual intolerance to one or another type of oil.

To improve the effect, add this mixture to the aroma lamp. Please note that inhalation with essential oils is prohibited for people who work in industries with a high dust content in the air. These substances turn dust in the lungs and bronchi into solids.

by Notes of the Wild Mistress

Aromatherapy is increasingly used in the treatment of various diseases. Essential oils are used not only in cosmetology, but also in medicine, for example, to treat coughs. When coughing, essential oils can be used in many ways: do cold and hot inhalations, rubbing and massages with them, spray them indoors.

Natural aromatic oils have several beneficial properties, providing a complex effect on the body. For example, eucalyptus oil fights viruses and bacteria, has an expectorant effect, and relieves inflammation, pain and spasms of the respiratory organs. Eucalyptus oil helps saturate the blood with oxygen, and this is an additional advantage for respiratory diseases.

Most essential oils, including eucalyptus, perfectly disinfect indoor air and protect your loved ones from microorganisms that, when coughing, are spread several meters around the coughing person.

In order to disinfect a room, you need to drop 4 drops of eucalyptus oil into a cup of hot (but not boiling) water and leave it in the room for 30 minutes - this time will be enough to completely free a room of 15 square meters from pathogenic microbes and viruses.

Pine and lavender, anise, chamomile and tea tree oils are good for coughs, and for young children it is better to use chamomile and lavender. To give your child inhalation, place 1 drop of essential oil in 1 liter of hot water (the water should be at such a temperature that the child does not get burned when inhaled). But before using essential oils to treat children, you should consult a pediatrician, especially if the child is allergic.

For children over 6 years old, a mixture of essential oils will help with a dry cough: take 1 drop each of chamomile and eucalyptus oil, drop the mixture into 1 liter of hot water and let the child breathe for 10 minutes, explaining before that that it is best to breathe through the mouth with eyes closed.

It is good to give your child a massage by rubbing the chest before bed with a mixture of 1 tablespoon of warm vegetable oil, 1 drop of tea tree oil, 1 drop of eucalyptus oil and 1 drop of lavender oil.

For a wet cough, when coughing leads to the release of sputum, you can speed up the process of getting rid of mucus by giving your child an inhalation of 1 drop of tea tree oil, 1 drop of eucalyptus, also mixing them with a liter of water. In this case, rub the chest with the same mixture that is used for dry cough.

These mixtures are also suitable for adults, but the amount of essential oil needs to be increased - for 1 liter of water to 3 drops of oil.

If you prefer to be treated in a bathhouse, then add 3-4 drops of pine, eucalyptus, fir or thuja oils to the steam water - the oils of any coniferous trees are healing for problems with the respiratory tract.

Essential oils have found wide application not only in cosmetology, but also for medicinal purposes, in particular, for various colds and inflammatory diseases. Essential oils for coughs help get rid of mucus accumulated in the bronchi and help remove pathogenic agents from the body.

Aromatherapy offers several options for using oils to treat coughs: rubbing, inhalation and bathing. Essential oils are a natural product that can relieve coughs and the disease itself.

The healing properties of concentrated aromas in the treatment of coughs

Essential oil has a complex effect on humans. They penetrate the respiratory system, calm the nervous system and alleviate the symptoms of the disease. For bronchitis, some of them have a detrimental effect on pathogenic microorganisms, relieve spasms and inflammation.

The main advantages of essential aromas include a reflex effect on the cough center, without disrupting respiratory functions. Pathogenic microorganisms that cause diseases are not able to develop an addiction to essential agents, even with prolonged contact with them.

To relieve coughing attacks, it is necessary to select essential concentrates that are effective against bacteria and viruses, have an anti-inflammatory effect, promote the removal of phlegm and have a disinfectant effect. It is this combination of properties that can give a pronounced effect in the treatment of diseases accompanied by cough symptoms.

To treat a dry cough, it is necessary to select those of these remedies that will help soften the irritated mucous membrane of the throat and stimulate the secretion of mucous secretion in the bronchi.

So, to achieve this effect, preference should be given to the following aromatic oils:

  • fir;
  • tea tree;
  • bergamot;
  • pine;
  • eucalyptus;
  • lavender;
  • chamomile;
  • anise.

If the cough is wet, then you need to liquefy it and quickly get it out. To achieve this, it is best to use mint, thyme, rosemary, fennel, sage, lemon balm, basil, tea tree or marjoram oil.

Fir, thanks to its healing properties, will help eliminate cough

Rubbing and bathing with aromatic oils

Rubbing with essential oils is considered effective for treating coughs. This procedure has a beneficial effect on the respiratory tract. It is suitable for both children and adults. To do this, take a teaspoon of vegetable oil, heat it up, and add eucalyptus, tea tree, chamomile and lavender oils to it.

If the procedure is done for children, then 1 drop of essential extract is calculated. If for an adult it is 2, and the amount of vegetable oil is doubled. It is advisable to carry out the procedure after inhalation or taking a bath.

To rub children suffering from cough, you can add ether to baby cream. For these purposes, tea tree, fir or mint extract is suitable. Add 2 drops per rubbing. Camphor oil has a good healing effect for coughs. It can also be added to baby cream.

To relieve cough, you can take baths using essential oils. Inhaling warm air in combination with beneficial aromas can relieve coughing attacks in various bronchopulmonary diseases. The main condition for such procedures is normal body temperature.

For children, such a procedure is undesirable, since their well-being may suffer after it.

The following combination of oils is suitable for taking baths, they are taken 1 drop each:

  • lavender;
  • chamomile;
  • eucalyptus;
  • pine;
  • 1 tbsp. l. honey;
  • 1 tbsp. l. milk.

All ingredients are mixed and poured into the bath. The duration should be no more than 15 minutes. This procedure can replace inhalation. For dry coughs, eucalyptus and chamomile oil are effective, and for wet coughs, a combination of tea tree and eucalyptus will help.

Aromatherapy in the form of rubbing will help with diseases of the bronchopulmonary system

Characteristics of essential drops

Essential medicinal oils have the same properties:

  • strong disinfectant;
  • have an anti-inflammatory effect;
  • gently relieve sore throat from dry cough;
  • help cough up mucus and breathe more freely.

The main plants from which medicinal drops are produced:

  1. Coniferous plants.
  2. Eucalyptus tree.
  3. Tea tree.
  4. Herbs: thyme, thyme, mint, sage, rosemary.

Mode of application:

  • inhalation;
  • massage;
  • trituration;
  • compress;
  • baths;
  • air spray.

Cough inhalations

Inhaling the aroma of essential oils is considered very beneficial for coughs. Inhalations are carried out using special devices, and in their absence, using improvised means. In the second case, the procedure is carried out according to the following algorithm:

  1. Pour a liter of hot water into a saucepan or deep bowl. Boiling water should not be used, as you can burn your mucous membranes if you inhale too hot air.
  2. Sit comfortably and tilt your head over a container of water.
  3. In this position, cover your head tightly with a blanket.
  4. Add essential oil to the water, following the dosage instructions.
  5. You need to breathe through your nose and mouth at the same time; it is advisable to keep your eyes closed during the procedure. The duration of the procedure is no more than 10 minutes.

To obtain the maximum and fastest effect, it is recommended to repeat inhalations every 2 hours. For children, it is recommended to reduce the dosage of oil by three times. So, per liter of water you need to use 1 drop of essential oil instead of 3.

For inhalation, the agents in question can be used either individually or in combination of several varieties. Various combinations of the following oils are considered effective in treating cough: cypress, spruce, peppermint, rosemary, thyme, lavender, eucalyptus, tea tree, sage.

It is known that bacteria, viruses and microbes can multiply quickly in dry air. This significantly increases the risk of illness for people who are in the same room as the sick person. With the help of essential aromas you can destroy pathogenic microorganisms.

To do this, pour 1 liter of hot water into a container and add eucalyptus, bergamot, lavender, pine and tea tree oils, 4 drops of each. The resulting mixture is left in the room for 30 minutes. It is recommended to renew the aromatic water every 3 hours.

If you have an aroma lamp, you can disinfect the air in the room using it. Another way to achieve a similar effect is to prepare a special alcohol solution with essential oils. To do this, 5 drops of different types of oils or any 1 drop of preference are mixed with 100 ml of medical alcohol. The resulting mixture is poured into a spray bottle and sprayed around the room every 2 hours.

How to treat cough with oils?

The oil of one plant can affect the body from the inside and outside.
There are several basic methods of using essential oils, the effectiveness of which has been proven over time:

  • Inhalations.
  • Aroma bath.
  • Treatment of the premises.
  • Rubbing or massage.

Inhalations are done cold and hot. When it’s cold, a person simply inhales the oil, and when it’s hot, vapor enters the body, which is more effective; in addition, beneficial substances also penetrate through the pores of the skin, bronchi and nasopharynx. But the cold method is safer and easier to perform, which is why it is often used for children with illnesses.

For hot inhalation, place a few drops of oil into a container of hot water and cover your head with a warm blanket or towel. You need to inhale the vapors immediately through your nose and exhale through your mouth, and then vice versa. The duration of this procedure should not exceed 5 minutes. For such inhalation, an oil solution is used in the following proportions: 1 drop of oil per 1 liter of hot water.

You can inhale cold aromatic oils for an unlimited amount of time. To do this, it is simply applied to cotton wool or a piece of cloth and placed next to the patient. Also, sometimes the healing agent is dripped onto clothes; now the aromas accompany the patient all day.

But before going to bed, you need to remove all objects with the product, because while sleeping it is better not to saturate the body with concentrated aromas.

If an acute respiratory infection is not accompanied by a fever, then it is very useful to take a bath with aromatic oils. To do this, you need to drop about 5-6 drops of liquid into the bath and stay in it for about 20 minutes. At this time, beneficial substances will fill the room and penetrate the steamed skin, into the respiratory tract and calm the nervous system.

Aroma oil can also prevent the spread of the virus indoors. To disinfect, you just need to add 3 drops of eucalyptus or fir oil and 1 drop of chamomile to a small container (about 100 ml in volume) with water at a temperature of about 80 - 90 degrees. This is enough to kill pathogens in a room of 15 square meters. m. You can leave such containers in each room and not worry about the spread of disease in the house.

Treating a room with essential oils is recommended during an epidemic as a preventive measure.

Rubbing also has a very positive effect on the body during wet and dry cough.

There are a lot of recipes for aromatic rubs. Here are a few of the most common:

Precautionary measures

Since they may have restrictions for use in relation to pregnant women, children and the elderly. It must be taken into account that the action of some of them can enhance the effect of antibacterial drugs.

Such treatments can cause an allergic reaction, so it is undesirable to increase their dosage, which is indicated in the instructions. For children, a smaller volume of oil is used compared to the adult dosage. Treatment with essential concentrates is contraindicated for children under 2 years of age.

In addition, there are the following contraindications for the use of essential oils:

  • hypertension;
  • migraine;
  • asthma;
  • pregnancy and breastfeeding;
  • individual intolerance.

If concentrated aromas are used for prevention, then use should be periodic, i.e., with breaks of 1–2 weeks. It is important to remember that any alternative medicine, including essential oils, does not exclude the need for drug treatment. They should be carried out in combination after preliminary consultation with the attending physician.
