Cough with thyroid disease: symptoms and treatment

Thyroid

Thyroid
The thyroid gland is an organ that takes part in all processes occurring in the human body that can be considered vital:

  1. Its location is under the larynx, on the anterior surface of the trachea.
  2. Consists of two lobes and an isthmus connecting them. The main component is a large number of follicles and epithelial cells.
  3. The main function of the thyroid gland is the production of thyroid hormones.

Despite its small size and light weight (30 g), the importance of the thyroid gland for normal human life and activity cannot be overestimated. The functionality of such an important organ depends on:

  • state of the nervous system;
  • mental activity of the brain;
  • level of the body's immune defense;
  • normal functioning of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems.

The level of thyroid hormones affects the functionality of many organs of the human body, but disturbances are not immediately noticeable. Doctors say that disorders associated with changes that occur in the thyroid gland often manifest themselves as other ailments and can only be detected during a specific examination.

Violation of the normal functionality of the gland causes a change in its size. In most cases, it begins to grow, provoking the appearance of some symptoms accompanying many well-known diseases. First of all, a dry cough appears, which is often associated with the development of an inflammatory process, colds or viral diseases.

By the time the cause that can cause a cough is clear, the disruption of the functionality of the gland becomes very significant, and the manifestation of the disease becomes obvious. A feature that distinguishes cough with the thyroid gland and forces one to pay attention to its condition is the lack of recovery when treated with traditional methods and usual medicinal compositions.

Causes of cough

Cough with thyroid disease is the result of pressure exerted by the enlarged organ on the trachea. It occurs when the thyroid gland increases in size and the production of hormones is impaired. Any disturbance in the activity of the gland leads to a change in its size, which develops slowly and gradually. It can be quite difficult to determine such a change at the initial stage of the disease, so a cough with a thyroid gland is often confused with a manifestation of a cold or smoker’s bronchitis.

Factors that cause cough are related to:

  • with a family history;
  • a small amount of iodine supplied to the body;
  • impaired absorption of iodine and its lack when entering the thyroid gland.

When answering whether the disease that has arisen can cause a cough, you can give an affirmative answer. Absolutely yes. Most often, such disorders are diagnosed by specialists in women. This is due to the production of certain hormones. At the onset of development, the disease occurs without signs of thyroid dysfunction. The danger lies in changes in the level of thyroid-stimulating hormone production. With elevated levels, gland tissue grows, it enlarges, and the person develops a goiter (diffuse or nodular).

The changed thyroid gland gradually affects and puts more and more pressure on the trachea, thereby causing certain difficulties when inhaling or swallowing. This can cause what is called a reflex cough.

At the appointment, the doctor is told about a constant sore throat and complains of discomfort caused by coughing.

The main reasons why thyroid cough appears is a manifestation of thyroid dysfunction, the symptoms of which have their own distinctive features during the development of a particular ailment:

  1. Thyroiditis caused by streptococcal infection, which is usually chronic. In addition to the fact that the patient is bothered by constant coughing, patients complain of difficulty breathing, pain behind the ears and in the back of the head. The skin on the throat is hyperemic and swollen.
  2. Granular inflammation develops suddenly and occurs in an acute form. Without a detailed examination, it is often confused with purulent tonsillitis, and therefore contact with specialists may be late, which significantly complicates treatment.
  3. Hashimoto's thyroiditis is a hereditary disease. Patients predisposed to its occurrence need to constantly monitor their health to prevent the development of changes in the thyroid gland. Accumulated pus complicates coughing and interferes with normal breathing.
  4. Fibrous goiter with a chronic course is quite rare. Patients complain of difficulty breathing, a constant dry cough, sore and dry throat, and difficulty swallowing. Treatment is surgical only.

The appearance of a cough due to the thyroid gland almost always accompanies the development of thyroiditis. Confirmation of a preliminary diagnosis requires a full instrumental examination.

Diseases accompanied by cough are manifested by a number of symptoms

The main symptoms are described by the following list:

  • “Lump” in the larynx itself.
  • There are difficulties when swallowing food, sometimes food gets stuck.
  • Attacks of severe suffocation.

Cough with an enlarged thyroid gland gradually worsens, the process is accompanied by the following symptoms:

  1. At the beginning of the disease, when the gland is still in the stage of change, coughing is rare, the patient does not feel any noticeable changes.
  2. Over time, the disease develops, leading to a significant enlargement of the thyroid gland. The cough becomes persistent, and the person notices difficulty swallowing. Some patients experience a “lump” in the larynx, food getting stuck when swallowing, and paroxysmal asphyxia.
  3. In certain cases, the enlargement of the gland becomes noticeable visually, for example, with the growth of a goiter, when the neck is deformed, the throat below becomes enlarged, as if bulging out. The cough begins to change in character, this is due to the activity of the goiter.

Iodine levels can be determined with a simple home test. The skin area should be densely smeared with iodine and absorption activity monitored. You can learn about the features of cough in thyroid diseases and the reasons for its development here:

Thyroid problems are often accompanied by indicators of heart disease. The patient feels:

  • stitching pain in the region of the heart;
  • tachycardia;
  • arrhythmia;
  • increased temper and nervousness.

The following symptoms are also characteristic:

  • weakness, a person gets tired very quickly;
  • frequent headaches;
  • difficulties in overcoming any load.

The diagnosis can be made using an ultrasound. However, this study does not provide a complete picture of the disease, and therefore the puncture method is often used. An accurate diagnosis can only be made after a group of studies.

When treating such a cough, an integrated approach is necessary.

Symptoms and diagnosis

Symptoms of a disease caused by a change in the size of the gland make it easier to identify a cough in the thyroid gland. Symptoms characteristic of damage to the thyroid gland and the main distinguishing feature of this disease, which gives the right to assert that the cough is associated specifically with impaired thyroid function, is the lack of a positive result after therapy with traditional antitussive drugs.

Symptoms and treatment of cough due to the thyroid gland are closely related to signs of a malfunction of the gland:

  • sudden chills;
  • increased sweating;
  • decreased appetite;
  • thirst;
  • rapid fatigue and constant fatigue in the absence of significant physical activity;
  • sleep disturbance;
  • sudden onset muscle pain;
  • brittle nails and hair;
  • dryness and flaking of the skin.

Against the background of these manifestations, there may be a cough. Dry, tearing, accompanied by a constant sore throat.

Accurate diagnosis, carried out in accordance with the latest technologies and using the most modern equipment, and the symptoms accompanying the appearance of cough with the thyroid gland will help confirm the preliminary diagnosis and exclude the presence of an inflammatory process in the bronchi or lungs.

It is impossible to make a correct diagnosis without a full instrumental examination:

  1. Ultrasound. This procedure will allow you to determine the size of the gland and detect changes in its structure.
  2. Doppler ultrasound, which is of great importance in making a diagnosis, as it is one of the most effective and detailed studies.
  3. Blood test for TSH, TG3 and TG4.
  4. MRI.
  5. Biopsy.

A general blood and urine test will help rule out the presence of other diseases that can cause a cough.

How to treat cough with thyroid disorders

To treat a cough that is associated with gland dysfunction, antitussive and expectorant drugs, mixtures and rubs will not help. First of all, treatment is to eliminate the problem or disease that caused its increase.

When establishing an accurate diagnosis, a specialist is based on test results indicating an enlarged thyroid gland and changes in hormonal levels.

If there is an iodine deficiency disease, the doctor will prescribe medications containing iodine, vitamins and minerals. When the amount of hormones increases or decreases, treatment with hormone replacement therapy is used, which can be for a long time, sometimes on an ongoing basis.

If cases of cough are severe, there are tumors and standard treatment cannot give the desired result, then surgery is required to remove the tumor or the entire thyroid gland, or a biopsy.

Therapeutic measures and prevention of disease development

Discovering the true cause of a dry cough can be difficult, but after an accurate diagnosis is made, the doctor prescribes treatment based on the presence of factors that can cause coughing:

  • presence of changes in the structure of the thyroid gland;
  • level of hormonal changes;
  • the negative impact the disease has on other organs and systems.

It is important to remember that you will not be able to get rid of cough using traditional methods of therapy. Do not give the patient medicines and tablets against dry cough or antitussives.

On the contrary, the patient is given iodine-containing drugs, mineral and vitamin complexes, and in the most difficult cases they resort to radical methods of treatment:

  • hormone replacement therapy;
  • radioactive exposure;
  • surgical intervention.

Iodine preparations can be introduced into the patient’s body as part of specialized medications. When autoimmune pathologies are detected, medications are administered directly into the gland itself.

Timely prevention will help to avoid dysfunction of the organ and the occurrence of cough due to the thyroid gland. First of all, you need to carefully monitor your own health, regularly undergo preventive examinations, and try to eat foods that contain the required amount of iodine, salts and minerals.

Basic treatment methods

It must be remembered that a cough is a sign of pathological changes.

And this symptom occurs under the influence of iodine deficiency, which is necessary for the normal production of hormones. A cough can also provoke other symptoms: a feeling of suffocation, the inability to eat normally, a feeling of heaviness in the head and dizziness.

To treat cough as a consequence of pathological changes in the thyroid gland, the following methods are used:

  • fixed assets;
  • auxiliary means.

The main ones include medications whose action is aimed at reducing the thyroid gland itself. Doses and specific medications are prescribed by an endocrinologist, who also determines the duration of treatment.

In cases where drug treatment does not produce the necessary results, a decision is made on surgical intervention, which may even result in complete removal of the organ.

Auxiliary products are aimed at reducing the body's reflex reactions to an enlarged thyroid gland. Here medications are used that have a calming effect on the cough center. Most often, such drugs contain codeine, which is considered an excellent remedy for eliminating dry cough. Medicines can be in the form of tablets or syrup. The latter is more preferable, since it also has an enveloping effect.

Folk remedies for cough control include inhalation and warming of the chest. These methods must be used with great caution: they can lead to complications, for example, purulent inflammation of the thyroid gland. It is also worth remembering that folk remedies will only help to calm the cough slightly, but they will not lead to its complete elimination.
