Types of tablets

The choice of inexpensive and effective tablets is determined depending on the nature and nature of the cough. They come in several types:

  • Bronchodilators - help relax smooth muscles and relieve spasms. This leads to the elimination of a cough attack. Prescribed for bronchitis and diseases that cause spasm of the respiratory tract.
  • Mucolytics are the main agents in the treatment of wet cough. They dilute the viscous thick mucus of the bronchial glands to facilitate its passage.
  • Opioids inhibit the cough reflex at the central level. The threshold of irritability in the cough center of the brain increases, and coughing is blocked. Their disadvantage is that they depress the entire nervous system and can be addictive.
  • Non-opioid antitussives (butamirate) suppress cough without affecting the central nervous system.
  • Combined - work in several directions, solving several problems at once.

This is an inexpensive product based on several components: ammonium chloride, sodium benzoate, potassium bromide, licorice and thermopsis. It has not only an expectorant, but also an anti-inflammatory and soothing effect.

Amtersol is used for coughs with difficult to separate sputum. For a 3-year-old patient, it is enough to give half a teaspoon of the product 3 times a day. It is contraindicated in case of individual intolerance, as well as in case of exacerbation of gastric ulcer. The only side effects reported were allergic reactions.

What cough medicines are there?

Among the wide variety of antitussives, there are three main groups that affect different parts of the pathogenesis of this symptom:

  1. Medicines that suppress cough at the brain level. They have an inhibitory effect on the cough center located in the medulla oblongata. Thanks to their influence, cough is suppressed completely or partially.
  2. Drugs that work at the level of bronchial smooth muscle. They lead to relaxation of the bronchi, making sputum easier to clear and the disease stopping.
  3. Agents that affect sputum itself. These drugs help liquefy it and help it leave the bronchi.

Drugs that have the ability to stop coughing are divided into central and peripheral agents. There are combination drugs that not only block it, but also have additional effects, for example, an expectorant.

Antitussives of central and peripheral action

The cough center is located in the medulla oblongata. Medicines in this group suppress symptoms by affecting specific areas of the brain. The main representatives of this group are morphine derivatives - codeine, etc. The main requirement for these drugs is that when suppressing cough, the respiratory center, which is located nearby, is not affected.

Different drugs are designed to solve specific problems

Peripheral antitussive medicine (Libexin) acts on the muscles of the bronchi, larynx and trachea, and suppresses the nerve impulses that the mucous membrane of these organs sends to the brain. Without receiving “cough impulses” from the periphery, the brain does not activate the cough center and the cough stops.

Expectorants and mucolytics

Expectorants, on the contrary, stimulate the muscles of the bronchi. This leads to increased mucus removal and restoration of the inflamed mucosa. There are many plant-based drugs in this group (thermopsis, marshmallow, licorice, oregano, etc.), as well as their synthetic analogues.

Mucolytics help with viscous, stagnant sputum, thinning thick mucus and removing it from the bronchi. This group of drugs includes ACC, Bromhexine and some enzymes.

In addition to the above groups of drugs, many combination drugs have been developed that combine several effects at once, for example, Stoptussin, Broncholitin, etc.

But if a child simply choked and coughed, this is one thing, but if this condition is a sign of a respiratory disease, then the parents begin to panic and pour the entire arsenal of antitussives from the home medicine cabinet into the child. Naturally, sooner or later you have to wonder what effective remedy to use for a child’s cough?

  • —Ascoril— (has an expectorant, bronchodilator and mucolytic effect, used from 6 years).
  • Bronchipret (has anti-inflammatory, expectorant, bronchodilator and sputum thinning effects, used from 12 years of age).

  • Add a spoonful of sugar and a glass of boiling water to the puree of 1 banana, stir, leave for 30 minutes, then strain.
  • Cut off the top of the black radish, remove some of the core, and add honey. Give the resulting juice a teaspoon several times a day.

  • Place a teaspoon of dry sage (can be bought at a pharmacy) in an enamel mug, pour a glass of milk and slowly bring to a boil. Give to drink shortly before bedtime.
  • You can also do warm foot baths with dry mustard, inhalations based on pine decoction, back massage with honey and salt. However, if there is no improvement after 1–2 days, you should definitely consult a doctor.
