In pediatrics, various cough remedies are used in children: expectorant syrups based on medications or herbs, nebulizer medications, homemade and folk recipes. Some of them help with dry cough, others with wet cough. In our article we will look at medications for patients of different ages - for children, from 3 years old, from 5 years old and older.
We will also list prices for children's cough remedies so that you can choose inexpensive but effective treatment. Of course, you should consult your doctor before taking any of these medications. After all, sometimes it is necessary to use not only expectorants or mucolytic drugs, but also antibacterial ones. Some of these products are available by prescription (especially cough suppressants and nebulizer solutions).
We provide many tables with drug names and prices. For convenience, in each of them the 2 most optimal means are highlighted in bold. They are described in more detail in the corresponding sections on medications according to the age of the young patient.

Types of tablets
The choice of inexpensive and effective tablets is determined depending on the nature and nature of the cough. They come in several types:
- Bronchodilators - help relax smooth muscles and relieve spasms. This leads to the elimination of a cough attack. Prescribed for bronchitis and diseases that cause spasm of the respiratory tract.
- Mucolytics are the main agents in the treatment of wet cough. They dilute the viscous thick mucus of the bronchial glands to facilitate its passage.
- Opioids inhibit the cough reflex at the central level. The threshold of irritability in the cough center of the brain increases, and coughing is blocked. Their disadvantage is that they depress the entire nervous system and can be addictive.
- Non-opioid antitussives (butamirate) suppress cough without affecting the central nervous system.
- Combined - work in several directions, solving several problems at once.

Cough medicines for patients over 3 years of age
At this time, you can already give such drugs for cough.
List
- Coldrex broncho syrup;
- Amtersol syrup;
- Doctor Mom syrup;
- Bronchobos syrup 2.5% (!) (5% syrup can be used from 15 years of age).
Amtersol
This is an inexpensive product based on several components: ammonium chloride, sodium benzoate, potassium bromide, licorice and thermopsis. It has not only an expectorant, but also an anti-inflammatory and soothing effect.
Amtersol is used for coughs with difficult to separate sputum. For a 3-year-old patient, it is enough to give half a teaspoon of the product 3 times a day. It is contraindicated in case of individual intolerance, as well as in case of exacerbation of gastric ulcer. The only side effects reported were allergic reactions.
What cough medicines are there?
Among the wide variety of antitussives, there are three main groups that affect different parts of the pathogenesis of this symptom:
- Medicines that suppress cough at the brain level. They have an inhibitory effect on the cough center located in the medulla oblongata. Thanks to their influence, cough is suppressed completely or partially.
- Drugs that work at the level of bronchial smooth muscle. They lead to relaxation of the bronchi, making sputum easier to clear and the disease stopping.
- Agents that affect sputum itself. These drugs help liquefy it and help it leave the bronchi.
Drugs that have the ability to stop coughing are divided into central and peripheral agents. There are combination drugs that not only block it, but also have additional effects, for example, an expectorant.
Antitussives of central and peripheral action
The cough center is located in the medulla oblongata. Medicines in this group suppress symptoms by affecting specific areas of the brain. The main representatives of this group are morphine derivatives - codeine, etc. The main requirement for these drugs is that when suppressing cough, the respiratory center, which is located nearby, is not affected.
Different drugs are designed to solve specific problems
Peripheral antitussive medicine (Libexin) acts on the muscles of the bronchi, larynx and trachea, and suppresses the nerve impulses that the mucous membrane of these organs sends to the brain. Without receiving “cough impulses” from the periphery, the brain does not activate the cough center and the cough stops.
Expectorants and mucolytics
Expectorants, on the contrary, stimulate the muscles of the bronchi. This leads to increased mucus removal and restoration of the inflamed mucosa. There are many plant-based drugs in this group (thermopsis, marshmallow, licorice, oregano, etc.), as well as their synthetic analogues.
Mucolytics help with viscous, stagnant sputum, thinning thick mucus and removing it from the bronchi. This group of drugs includes ACC, Bromhexine and some enzymes.
In addition to the above groups of drugs, many combination drugs have been developed that combine several effects at once, for example, Stoptussin, Broncholitin, etc.

A 5-year-old patient is prescribed half a tablet 2 times a day. The drug is well tolerated, only occasionally causing indigestion, dry nose, headache or an allergic reaction. Contraindications – individual intolerance to ambroxol, peptic ulcer of the stomach and intestines, severe liver failure.
Ambrohexal
Also contains ambroxol. Therefore, its indications, contraindications and side effects are the same as those of Chalixol. You may need to take more fluids while using this product. A 6-year-old patient with a cough is prescribed half a tablet 2 times a day.
Cough medicines for children over 3 years old
A child’s cough has always been and remains a cause for concern for every parent. But a cough is simply a protective unconditional reaction of the body to any type of irritant, due to which the airways are cleared of this irritant, be it dust, accumulated secretions, or a foreign body, which often happens in young children. But if a child simply choked and coughed, this is one thing, but if this condition is a sign of a respiratory disease, then the parents begin to panic and pour the entire arsenal of antitussives from the home medicine cabinet into the child. Naturally, sooner or later you have to wonder what effective remedy to use for a child’s cough?
Cough medications from 12 years of age
In patients of this age, you can use any of the remedies listed above, as well as the following.
List
- Hexo Broncho (solution);
- Codelac Broncho tablet form;
- thermopsis cough tablets;
- Bronchoxol extended-release capsules;
- Bronchorus tablet form;
- Lazongin lozenges.
From the age of 15, Bronchobos syrup 5% (!) (2.5% can be used from 3 years) and Bronchobos capsules are approved for use.
Cough tablets
The familiar cough tablets containing thermopsis herb and soda (sodium bicarbonates) can only be given to children over 12 years of age. They are used for tracheitis and bronchitis as an expectorant. Thermopsis in large doses can cause the main side effect of the drug - nausea. Therefore, they are taken no more than 3 times a day, 1 piece, for 3 to 5 days. Contraindications: individual intolerance and peptic ulcer of the stomach and duodenum.
Bronchorus
This drug can also be used in tablet form. It contains a powerful mucolytic agent, ambroxol. Indications for use: bronchitis, pneumonia, bronchial asthma and other conditions with difficult to cough up sputum.
Take 1 tablet 3 times a day for no more than 5 days, then you must consult a doctor. Side effects: dry nasopharynx, runny nose, skin reactions (rash, swelling), in rare cases, constipation or loose stool. Bronchorus is contraindicated in case of individual intolerance to ambroxol and in the 1st trimester of pregnancy.
Tablets for the treatment of wet cough
In such a situation, doctors often prescribe medications whose action is aimed at removing mucus from the respiratory tract. These drugs are usually mucolytics and expectorants, as well as combination agents.
Mucolytics
Most often, to get rid of a wet cough, pediatricians prescribe the following mucolytics in tablet form to children:
- Bromhexine (indicated from 3 years).
- —Ambroxol— (in tablet form, the drug is approved from 12 years of age).
- Ambrobene (shown from 12 years of age).
- Acetylcysteine (indicated from 2 years).
- Carbocisteine (for use even by the smallest in the dosage prescribed by the doctor).
Expectorant medications
Children can be prescribed the following effective cough expectorants in tablet form:
- Thermopsol (suitable for use even by the smallest in the dosage prescribed by the doctor).
- —Mukaltin— (prescribed from 3 years of age).
Medicines with combined effects
Such remedies, as a rule, “work” in several directions: they relieve spasms in the bronchi, dilute mucus, promote its removal from the body, and soothe the inflamed mucous membrane of the respiratory system. Among the combination tablets approved for use in the treatment of childhood cough syndrome are:
- —Ascoril— (has an expectorant, bronchodilator and mucolytic effect, used from 6 years).
- Bronchipret (has anti-inflammatory, expectorant, bronchodilator and sputum thinning effects, used from 12 years of age).
- Terpinkod (has an expectorant and antitussive effect, used from 2 years).
- Stoptussin (expectorant, antitussive and mucolytic drug, used from 12 years of age).
Remedies for dry cough in children
To eliminate a dry cough without sputum in the first days of the disease (for example, with whooping cough or acute tracheitis), cough suppressants can be used only as prescribed by a doctor. They cannot be combined with expectorants and mucolytic drugs, medicinal herbs that cause sputum formation. Some of them contain codeine and are prescribed on special prescription forms.

Traditional recipes and herbs for coughs
Here are a few examples of folk recipes based on medicinal herbs that can be used successfully, especially in addition to medications:
- Add a spoonful of sugar and a glass of boiling water to the puree of 1 banana, stir, leave for 30 minutes, then strain.
- Cut off the top of the black radish, remove some of the core, and add honey. Give the resulting juice a teaspoon several times a day.
- Rinse a glass of pine nuts in shell, pour in a liter of milk and boil, cover with a towel to steep well. You can give this decoction half a glass several times a day.
- Place a teaspoon of dry sage (can be bought at a pharmacy) in an enamel mug, pour a glass of milk and slowly bring to a boil. Give to drink shortly before bedtime.
- You can also do warm foot baths with dry mustard, inhalations based on pine decoction, back massage with honey and salt. However, if there is no improvement after 1–2 days, you should definitely consult a doctor.
