Comparison of drugs Rinonorm or Rinostop

With various infectious and allergic diseases, swelling of the mucous membrane of the upper respiratory tract is observed, which leads to deterioration of nasal breathing and stagnation of mucous discharge. In such a situation, it is very important to use local vasoconstrictor drops and sprays to improve ventilation of the nasal sinuses, Eustachian tubes and better outflow of secretions. This way you can protect yourself from complications of the disease and speed up your recovery. Many experts recommend using the German drug Rinonorm for these purposes. Our article provides complete instructions for using Rinonorm.

Pharmacological action and release form

Rinonorm is available as a spray in dark glass bottles of 10 and 15 ml. Each bottle has a special nasal nozzle with a dosing device. Rinonorm nasal drops are not produced; the medicine is available only in the form of a spray.

This colorless, transparent liquid belongs to the group of vasoconstrictor medications intended for topical nasal use. If you have been prescribed Rinonorm, why this drug can be read in the annotation for the drug: this is a vasoconstrictor drug, namely an alpha-adrenergic agonist, which belongs to the category of anticongestive drugs.

Rinonorm - a nasal spray for children and adults, when injected into the nose, helps to narrow the lumen of arterioles, resulting in a decrease in swelling of the nasopharyngeal mucosa and hyperemia. The medicine also helps to reduce the amount of mucous secretion discharged from the nose. After using the drug, the pronounced effect appears within a couple of minutes and lasts for 6-8 hours. Rinonorm restores the patency of the nasal sinuses and passages, as well as the Eustachian tubes. The drug helps to improve the patient’s well-being and reduce the likelihood of complications due to stagnation of mucous discharge.

Important! Since the medicine is used only topically for the nose, xylometazoline is practically not absorbed into the circulatory system.

Xylometazoline “relatives” of the drug

The spray has an affordable price - from 50 to 60 rubles, and the children's form of the drug costs slightly more than the adult form - about 80 rubles. Many analogues of Rinonorm with exactly the same composition are much more expensive. If they are released in drops, they are contraindicated for children under 6 years of age, and the product described can be used from 2 years of age. Therefore, it is hardly advisable to look for analogues. The only criticism that some patients have about this medicine is the short shelf life. But this is explained by the fact that it does not contain preservatives. Taking into account the low cost, it can be purchased for each new disease.

Here are the most famous analogues of this nasal spray:

  • cheaper ones - Galazolin (Poland, about 33-38 rubles);
  • in the same price category - Xylen (domestic medicine, 66-68 rubles), Xylometazoline (60-62 rubles), Rinorus (Russia, 71-80 rubles);
  • somewhat more expensive - Rinostop (Russian, 90 rubles), Grippostad Rino (German spray, from 85 rubles), Dlynos (India, 95-104 rubles), Tizin Xylo (98-103 rubles);
  • expensive - Snoop (Germany, 119-139 rubles); Otrivin (Switzerland, 153-167 rubles); Xymelin (produced by Danish and Norwegian branches, 190-230 rubles)

Both the active substance and its concentration in these drugs are the same. The downside, regardless of the manufacturer, is also the same for everyone: all vasoconstrictors, when used for a long time, cause the opposite effect - hypertrophy of the mucous membrane and chronic nasal congestion. The popular Otrivin Complex acts faster, since it also contains ipratropium bromide, but it is only allowed for people over 18 years of age.

Rinonorm is a product from a Western European manufacturer, so you can count on its high quality. In addition, it is not exorbitantly priced and is guaranteed to help your nose breathe. But we must remember that eliminating mucus during rhinitis is not an end in itself. The main thing is to cure the disease, and not to remove the unpleasant symptom. In addition, Rinonorm can only be used for a limited period.

Nasal spray for adults in the form of a clear, colorless solution.

xylometazoline hydrochloride 10 mg.

Excipients: citric acid monohydrate, sodium citrate, glycerol 85%, water for injection.

Clinical and pharmacological group: Vasoconstrictor product for topical use in ENT practice.

pharmachologic effect

Alpha adrenergic agonist for topical use in ENT practice, has a vasoconstrictor effect.

When used topically, it causes a constriction of arterioles, leading to a decrease in hyperemia and swelling of the mucous membranes of the nasopharynx and a decrease in secretion. A distinct local effect of the product is detected within 5-10 minutes and persists for several hours (up to 10 hours), manifesting itself in the restoration of patency of the nasal passages, sinus openings and Eustachian tubes. Restoring air patency of the nasopharynx improves the patient’s well-being and reduces the risk of possible complications caused by stagnation of mucous secretions.

Pharmacokinetics

When used topically, xylometazoline is practically not absorbed, so the concentrations in the blood plasma are very small (not analytically determined).

Indications

Rinonorm is used as symptomatic therapy for the following diseases and conditions:

  • acute viral or bacterial;
  • spicy ;
  • acute or exacerbation of chronic sinusitis;
  • acute (to reduce swelling of the mucous membrane of the Eustachian tube);
  • preparing the patient for diagnostic procedures in the nasal passages.

Dosage regimen

The dose of the product depends on the degree of congestion in the nasal passages during a runny nose.

Adults and children over 6 years of age are prescribed Rinonorm spray for adults, 1 dose (1 press on the piston device) in each nasal passage 1-3 times a day.

The amount of liquid entering the patient’s nasal passage (1 dose) is equal to 0.09 ml of solution and, accordingly, 0.09 mg of xylometazoline.

Children aged 2 to 6 years are prescribed Rinonorm spray for babies, 1 dose (1 press on the piston device) in each nasal passage 1-3 times a day.

The amount of liquid entering the patient’s nasal passage (1 dose) is equal to 0.045 ml of solution and, accordingly, 0.045 mg of xylometazoline.

Before using the product, the nasal passages must be cleared of secretions. When administering the product, you should take a light breath through your nose.

During the period of use of Rinonorm thereafter, every day, the product should be administered immediately before bedtime.

After the symptoms are relieved, treatment is stopped. The duration of continuous use of the product should not exceed 5-7 days. Longer treatment (for example, for chronic rhinitis) can only be prescribed by a doctor, under whose direct supervision the use of the product will be continued (there is a risk of atrophy of the nasal mucosa).

Repeated courses of treatment are possible only after a break of several days.

Side effect

From the side of the central nervous system: in isolated cases - headache, insomnia, fatigue.

From the cardiovascular system: in exceptional cases - palpitations, increased blood pressure.

Local reactions: burning and dryness of the nasal mucosa; not often - reactive, swelling of the nasal mucosa. There are reports of the possibility of developing drug-induced rhinitis with the subsequent occurrence of atrophy with the formation of scabs in certain areas of the nasal mucosa due to the very frequent use of xylometazoline, especially in large doses over a long period of time.

Contraindications

  • children under 2 years of age (for baby spray);
  • children under 6 years of age (for adult spray);
  • high sensitivity to xylometazoline or other components of the product.

With extreme caution, only as directed and under constant medical supervision in cases where the intended benefit outweighs the potential risk, the product should be used for angle-closure glaucoma, severe arterial hypertension, tachycardia, hyperthyroidism, pheochromocytoma, concomitant use of MAO inhibitors or other substances that increase blood pressure .

Pregnancy and lactation

Data on the use of the product during pregnancy and breastfeeding are not provided.

special instructions

There is still no information about the possible development of drug dependence.

Impact on the ability to drive vehicles and operate machinery

Typically, xylometazoline does not have a significant effect on performance and does not impede the work of vehicle drivers or control moving machinery, except when the product is used in very large doses, when adverse reactions from the central nervous system and cardiovascular system become possible, which can negatively affect the ability drive a car or moving machinery.

Overdose

If symptoms of overdose appear, consult a doctor immediately.

Symptoms: in case of overdose or accidental ingestion of a substance - nausea, vomiting, increased body temperature, convulsive muscle twitching, arrhythmias, increased blood pressure, respiratory failure, collapse, cardiac arrest. In addition, due to inhibition of central nervous system function, sudden drowsiness, a decrease in body temperature, a drop in blood pressure, and respiratory arrest are possible.

Rinonorm is a local vasoconstrictor. It is prescribed to eliminate nasal congestion due to swelling in infectious, inflammatory and allergic diseases, which are accompanied by a profuse runny nose. The article provides detailed instructions for the use of Rinonorm for adults and children.

Reviews

We invite you to read the reviews of people who have used the drug Rinonorm:

  1. Julia. I really liked this drug, it eliminates nasal congestion very quickly and, as stated in the instructions, for 6-8 hours. I tried it on a child who has acute sinusitis and adenoids in the entire nasal passage, they actually narrow and it’s easier to breathe.
  2. Dasha. When the first cold weather arrived, my son fell ill, and then the runny nose spread to my husband and me. Our whole family was cured with the help of Rinonorm. The drug is affordable, it has a convenient “spout” that needs to be inserted into the nostril to spray the medicine. The jet is “divergent”, so in 1 injection it irrigates the entire internal space. There is no feeling of dry mucous membranes. Rinonorm helps to completely overcome a runny nose in 2-3 days.
  3. Irina. The child developed a cold and his nose became very clogged. The pharmacist advised me to buy Rinonorm drops to get rid of mucus. They instilled it only at night to avoid complications, and the next time, when the acute respiratory infection dragged on, an interval was made every 2 days. In parallel with it, we drip Sinupret, which, although it does not help to breathe easily, is an excellent treatment.

Rinonorm nasal spray: dosage for children and adults

Rinonorm nasal spray should be used in the following dosage:

  • Children over 10 years of age and adults: 1 dose (one press) into each nasal sinus no more than 3 times a day.
  • Children aged 2 to 10 years: 1 dose, 3 times a day.
  • The maximum permitted use of the drug per day is no more than 7 times. In this case, the interval between doses should be at least 6 hours.

The course of treatment usually lasts up to 7 days. If stable therapeutic results are not observed within a week, the use of Rinonorm nasal spray should be stopped and replaced with another drug, but only on the recommendation of a doctor.

note

Before using the nasal spray, be sure to clear mucus from your sinuses to facilitate administration of the drug and speed up its therapeutic effect.

With the help of the medicine, the nasal mucosa is freed from mucus, breathing becomes easier, swelling of the mucous tissue is relieved, each nasal sinus is freed and the general condition of the patient improves.

Please note that Rinonorm nasal spray is not used during pregnancy and lactation.

Even though this drug is available without a prescription, you should not use the medicine without a doctor’s prescription, both for children and adults.

Since the drug has an effect on blood vessels - it narrows their walls, it can also have the same effect on the blood vessels of the placenta during pregnancy. As a result of such exposure, the natural movement of blood decreases and its flow to the vessels of the placenta decreases, which can cause disruption of the development and growth of the fetus in the womb. The amount of nutrients supplied to the fetus through the blood also decreases.

Application of Rinonorma for children

Rinonorm is often used to treat children with nasopharyngeal diseases. Indications for its use are:

  1. Rhinitis. As a rule, acute rhinitis in children of a bacterial or viral nature is treated with drops or spray. The medicine also helps eliminate allergic rhinitis in a child.

  2. Sinusitis. The inflammatory process in the sinuses is often accompanied by swelling of the nasal mucosa, which makes breathing difficult in children. To eliminate negative symptoms, vasoconstrictor nasal drops are used.

  3. Otitis. With this disease, the Eustachian tubes often swell, so drops are prescribed as an additional remedy to eliminate this problem.

Contraindications for children are the same as for adults. It should also be noted that 0.05% drops are not used for children under 2 years of age, and 0.1% are not used to treat a child under 10 years of age.

How to instill the drug?

Treatment of children, especially preschool age, with the use of Rinonorm nasal drops is necessary only as prescribed by a doctor and under his supervision. The choice of drug form depends on the age of the child:

For patients aged 2 to 10 years, there is a special form of drops and spray, which contains 0.5 mg of xylometazoline per 1 ml of medication. How to use:

  • drip 1 drop into each nasal passage no more than 3 times a day;
  • When using a spray, 1 or maximum 2 injections per day is sufficient.

For children over 10 years of age, a drug with a dosage of the active substance of 0.1% is used. Dosage:

  • drops – one or two drops in each nostril, 2-3 times during the day;
  • spray - one spray into each nostril up to three times a day.

The product should be used as follows:

  1. Before using drops, mucus, dust and other microparticles should be removed from the nasal cavity. To do this, the nose is washed with saline solution or Aquamaris, after which the child must blow his nose. You can use a syringe to drain pathological secretions from the nose.

  2. Next, you should place the child in a horizontal position and tilt his head back.
  3. Carefully observing the recommended dosage, apply nasal drops.
  4. After the procedure, you need to ask the child to lie down for a few minutes. This will allow the drug to penetrate deep into the nasal cavity and enhance the therapeutic effect.
  5. The duration of treatment depends on the severity of the disease. Continuous use of the medicine for more than 7 days is prohibited. This can lead to both the side effects described below and addiction. If continued treatment is required, you need to select a drug based on a different active ingredient.

Negative consequences

Among the side effects in young children, the following are often observed:

  • local allergic reactions (irritation of the nasal mucosa, itching and burning);

  • drying out of the nasal mucosa;
  • skin rashes, redness and swelling;
  • dizziness and headache;
  • decreased appetite;
  • problems falling asleep;
  • excessive excitability;
  • Sometimes there were cases of confusion.

Important! Such negative reactions may be associated with improper use of the drug, violation of the dosage regimen, or exceeding the recommended course of therapy. If side effects occur, you should stop taking the medication.

As a rule, this is enough to eliminate unpleasant symptoms. But in some cases, children may overdose. It manifests itself:

  • increased heart rate;
  • increased blood pressure;
  • the appearance of symptoms of intoxication (attacks of nausea, vomiting, increased body temperature);
  • loss of consciousness.

Analogs

Let's look at drugs that can replace Rinonorm.

Galazolin is a vasoconstrictor often prescribed in otolaryngology. The active ingredient is xylometazoline, which helps to constrict blood vessels, eliminate nasal congestion, and reduce exudation in the nasopharynx.

Indications for use of Rinonorm are similar to Galazolin due to the same active ingredient. The drug is used for acute infectious and allergic rhinitis, otitis, eustachitis, sinusitis. Can be prescribed from the age of two in a special, less concentrated (0.05%) dosage form. Pregnant and nursing mothers are not recommended to use the product.

Otrivin is a vasoconstrictor drug that is effective in treating the common cold. The active substance, like other analogues, is xylometazoline. The drug is prescribed for respiratory tract infections accompanied by runny nose, hay fever, allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, eustachitis.

The drug is prescribed to children over two years of age. In rare cases, the attending physician may prescribe Otrivin earlier - in infancy, strictly monitoring the treatment process. Expectant and nursing mothers can use the product only with the permission of a doctor, provided that the expected therapeutic effect is higher than the possible risk to the child.

It is not advisable to use drugs based on xylometazoline on your own. Without knowing what Rinonorm helps with and its effect on the body, the patient, with uncontrolled use of the drug, can provoke the appearance of undesirable reactions. The remedy must be prescribed by a specialist.

According to the instructions, Rinonorm should not be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding without a doctor's prescription. The drug should not be prescribed to children under two years of age. The spray is used up to 3 times a day in the recommended dosage, for a course of no more than 7 days. If unpleasant symptoms appear, treatment of a runny nose with this remedy should be stopped and consult a doctor.
