A visit to the pool is not only a recreational measure, but also complete relaxation and entertainment. But this only applies to a healthy person. After all, it often happens that with a weakened immune system, a person develops a cold after swimming in the pool.

Symptoms of colds

Colds are diseases caused by hypothermia. They are expressed by coughing, sneezing, runny nose, bronchitis and sometimes fever. This condition is often observed in the autumn-winter period, caused by wet feet and freezing.

This condition is manifested by the following symptoms:

  • headache,
  • body aches,
  • cough,
  • tearfulness,
  • elevated temperature,
  • poor appetite
  • insomnia,
  • chills.

If the above factors manifest themselves, treatment must be started immediately, because there may be a risk of complications in the form of bronchitis, otitis media, pneumonia, sinusitis, etc. The most common pathogens are considered to be viruses that can be contracted in public places. Colds occur with weakened immunity, frequent stress, bad habits and a sedentary lifestyle.

Red Throat – Library – Doctor Komarovsky

Authors: Dubatovka N. D.

Society is subject to an attraction to fanatical treatment. Hopes in a urologist are in vain when urine hits the head of someone who likes to “treat” others.

I know the perfect way to cure a sore throat is to cut it. Alfred Hitchcock, “Rules for Living,” Esquire magazine

“We have a red throat” - this can be a complaint or a statement of fact.

“Your throat is red” - this phrase simultaneously answers questions and makes you tense.

Well, who hasn’t heard something like this dialogue: “Yes... your throat is red...” - “Ah... well, then I understand...”. Personally, I don’t understand anything at all... Let’s try to clarify this issue.

What is a throat? Dictionary definition: “The part of the neck in front of the spinal column. The upper border is the hyoid bone, the lower - the manubrium of the sternum and the clavicle. The term “throat” is common, but not anatomical. It has not been listed in the latest anatomical terminology since 1997. Numerous vital organs and systems pass through the throat: the carotid arteries, the vagus and other nerves, the esophagus, the trachea, the larynx, the pharyngeal muscles and the muscles of the neck.”

After reading this definition, the whole tragedy of the dialogues about the red throat becomes visible. Where is this throat? Is it really possible that when you open your mouth, you can see its structures located below the hyoid bone? Come on... You won’t see any of the above (what the throat is made of).

Doctors also sometimes use the word “pharynx.” Let's turn again to the dictionary: “Zev is an opening connecting the oral cavity with the pharynx; a narrowed section of the oral cavity, through which it communicates with the pharynx; bounded above by the posterior edge of the soft palate, on the sides by the velopharyngeal and palatoglossus arches, below by the upper surface of the root of the tongue.”

You already understand that talking about the red pharynx, that is, the “red hole,” is also inappropriate.

So what do you really need to see to determine whether a person is healthy or sick by looking into his mouth?

  1. Palatine arches and soft palate, uvula
  2. Solid sky
  3. Language
  4. Teeth, gums
  5. Mucous cheeks, lips
  6. Posterior wall of the pharynx
  7. Tonsils

Each element is of exceptional importance for making a diagnosis. Not just “red throat - oh, I see.”

However, people still use this term “red throat” and mean something by it. Therefore, it will not be possible to move away from the “throat”, but oh well - this has long been firmly rooted in our speech. Almost like “diathesis”, although it has long been known that the use of this term is incorrect.

So why does the “throat” turn red?

  1. The most common cause (80%) is acute viral pharyngitis.
  2. Bacterial pharyngitis causes the same reaction.
  3. Chemical (airborne allergens, tobacco smoke), physical (crying, long conversation, coughing on its own, incorrect air parameters) and even mechanical (candy, for example), thermal (hot tea and food) irritants.
  4. Reflux disease.
  5. Allergic reaction.
  6. Coloring with food coloring.

And this list is not final...

Remember: a red throat is not a disease. Similarly, it can be argued that the absence of redness does not mean that the body is generally healthy!

It is clear that situations where the only complaint of the patient (his parents) is the phrase “something about our throat is red...” (and this redness was noticed by the mother in the light of a flashlight during a routine examination without any reason), cause skepticism. (Skepticism, by the way, actually helps smart people distinguish truth from lies...).

Even more skepticism is caused by medical withdrawal from vaccinations, refusal to communicate with people, absence from school or kindergarten only because of a “red throat” found.

The main thing to take away from what you read above is: “A RED THROAT IN ITSELF MEANS EXACTLY NOTHING.” A red throat is not a disease; it does not need to be treated. In addition to stating this fact, it is necessary to remember the importance of medical history and complaints (pain is important, soreness is important, swelling and mucus are also important, but simply redness does not mean anything).

“The child has a red throat for a month! What to do?"

“An adult has a constantly red throat. How can I help you?"

“Red throat. We need a quick way!”

“They took a child out of the garden with a red throat. What to do?"

“We can’t get vaccinated because of the red throat. How to treat?

“The child has a red throat! What should I do?

“The baby has a red throat! I'm afraid of starting the disease. Help!"

“Local treatment with herbs, sprays, lozenges, rinses”

“For exacerbation of a red throat - antibiotics”

“Stay at home and don’t go out, drink hot tea”

“The best folk recipes... from “Anoint with turpentine” to “Bioptron”

All these “miracle tips” can only lead (IMHO) to even more redness... Because “sprayers” are mainly alcohol-based (chemical irritation), lollipops are with dyes, herbs can cause an allergic reaction, hot tea can cause burns and etc.

So, it's time to sum it up.

  • You shouldn't look into your throat just like that. Who knows what color he wants to be today? What if you see that today it is purple?
  • “Red throat” is a very subjective conclusion. I suggest an experiment. Go to the clinic and show your throat to 20 doctors without any complaints. Go again the next day. The result of the experiment will stun you.
  • Be attentive to your health, but be prudent, remember common sense and logic.
  • Everything described here applies to healthy people. If, in addition to the throat, there are complaints about something else, then you need to figure it out. BUT! Even in the case of a real illness, you should not limit yourself to the dialogue: “Your throat is red” - “Well, then it’s clear! The throat is our weak point...” It’s better to ask: what part of the “throat” is red?

And if suddenly the doctor does not prescribe you “local therapy”, shake his hand tightly...

Is it possible to go to the pool with a cold?

Swimming is one of the sports that involves physical activity. Thanks to them, a person begins to get sick less, becomes stronger and healthier. Some people believe that visiting a salt water pool has a beneficial effect on the body during colds. This is especially true for a runny nose, since salt water rinses the sinuses.

INTERESTING fact: Is it possible to go to the pool with herpes?

But is this correct when visiting public institutions? From an ethical point of view, this is considered unacceptable. But if you have a pool at home, then such an outcome is quite possible. Doctors especially recommend swimming in home pools for children with colds. In this case, you should adhere to certain rules:

  • if there is no fever;
  • the water temperature should be sufficiently warm;
  • It is advisable to add sea salt and herbs to the water;
  • Do not swim in the pool if you have a cough and chills;
  • It is also not recommended to swim if you feel unwell or weak.

These rules should be followed not only by children, but also by adults. After completing the procedure, it is recommended to drink warm tea and go to bed.

Air temperature

If your pool is located outside, then this paragraph will not be very interesting to you, since the weather itself regulates the air temperature. But if the tank is indoors, then the air space is under your control.

The air, or rather its temperature, directly depends on the water in the bowl. In short, it should be 3-4 degrees warmer than the contents of the pool. This way, people coming out of the water will not feel a sharp cooling, and there will be no stuffiness in the room.

Adult pool water temperature

This figure can range from 22 to 28 degrees, depending on your conditions and preferences.

Please note that a difference of 6 degrees will be greatly felt. So remember to adjust the heat depending on the weather.

It is only necessary to note that in a swimming pool the level is set at 22-24 degrees, and for water gymnastics it is higher - 26-28.

If you want to swim or play active games, then set the temperature lower, as your body itself will heat up as a result of active movement. When relaxing, heat the water to a comfortable level in advance and maintain it.

Water temperature in the children's pool

Water for children should be warmer
Water for children should be warmer

Now it remains to figure out the water temperature in the children's pool. This issue deserves close attention, since children get sick very easily, which is extremely undesirable. Let's figure it out.

Please note that the data below is designed for babies aged 2-3 months. For children over 4 years old, you can safely set the temperature as for an adult.

After birth, the baby needs to have a bath at home. After he is 2-3 months old and after consulting with a supervising doctor, you can start visiting the pool.

For the first time the temperature should be 37 degrees. Then with each session we reduce it, and already at the 18-22 session the water temperature is 35 degrees. Then we gradually reduce it to 30, and then we always maintain the temperature for the child around 28-30.

It is recommended to maintain a level of 36 degrees for children from 2-3 months of age, and from 32 to 34 for children from six months of age.

Swimming pool for bronchitis and asthma

The most common complication of a cold is bronchitis. It manifests itself as a cough and sore throat. Doctors recommend complex treatment with contrast baths at appropriate temperatures. If you have bronchitis, you can go to the pool only during remission. Indeed, in the acute phase, the health condition may worsen.

But for bronchial asthma, on the contrary, a swimming pool is recommended. Doctors say that swimming helps in some cases to get rid of the disease. The lungs expand during swimming and work at full strength.

INTERESTING fact: Psychosomatics of colds in adults

In order to avoid contracting bronchitis after swimming, you need to take a closer look at the general condition of the body. And if there is the slightest symptom that predisposes the development of the disease, it is better to postpone going to the establishment.

Health to you!

Swimming with a sore throat

ARVI or colds are not uncommon during a holiday at sea. Is it possible to swim with a sore throat?

Sea and cold

What to do if your throat hurts at sea? Climate change requires adaptation of the body, this can cause a temporary weakening of local immunity. This often happens if you bathe a lot in the first days. Children are especially susceptible to diseases of the ENT organs. They note:

  • acute respiratory infections;
  • pharyngitis;
  • tonsillitis;
  • angina;
  • otitis;
  • sinusitis.

Is it possible to swim in the sea if a child or adult is sick? If you have complaints of sore throat, sore throat, or nasal discharge, you should avoid swimming. Water procedures can aggravate the disease and lead to complications. It is necessary to wait until the temperature normalizes and all unpleasant symptoms disappear.

But, even if the patient notices a significant improvement in his condition, he should refrain from swimming for another 1-2 days. This will prevent the cold from recurring.

On average, the duration of uncomplicated ARVI is 3–7 days. Swimming with a sore throat is strictly prohibited.

Angina

Sore throat is an infection of the palatine tonsils. Its causative agent is beta-hemolytic streptococcus. The disease is characterized by a pronounced intoxication syndrome, its course is often severe, especially in children.

Untreated tonsillitis leads to glomerulonephritis (kidney damage) and rheumatism. This is a systemic pathology in which the joints and heart suffer. Damage to the tonsils requires the mandatory prescription of antibiotics; they prevent the development of complications.

If a child gets a sore throat at sea, swimming is contraindicated for him throughout the entire period of treatment. Violation of the regime can lead to the disease becoming chronic. The patient is not allowed to take baths. However, it is possible and necessary to wash in a warm shower after the temperature has returned to normal.

Prevention

How to protect a child or adult from a cold at sea? First of all, it is necessary to give the body time to adapt. This is especially true for people living in a different climate zone. In the first days, you should not allow your child to swim in cool water – 18–20°C, as this can easily cause a cold.

You can also get ARVI after prolonged exposure to the sun - overheating also causes a temporary weakening of the immune system. Adaptation to new conditions - insolation and sea - must be gradual.

A sore throat can occur when dirty seawater gets into your mouth. You need to teach your child how to dive correctly and keep an eye on kids who like to drink water when swimming.

If you have a sore throat or other symptoms of a cold, doctors do not recommend swimming even in the warm sea. This can worsen the course of the disease and provoke the development of complications. It is necessary to wait for a complete recovery, especially if a small child is sick.

Sports for a mild cold

Inflammation of the tonsils is considered a common disease affecting the upper tract. The palatine tonsils are an important part of the body; their main task is to identify the infection that has entered the mucous membrane and remove it. Regular bacterial infections significantly weaken the protective properties, and the patient develops advanced tonsillitis. The tonsils consist of lymphoid tissue, which regularly becomes inflamed and becomes denser. A purulent plaque forms on them, collecting into plugs. During the period of inflammation, the almond cavities (lacunae) become a favorable environment for the proliferation of bacteria. Pathogenic microorganisms spread to nearby organs.

Sore throat and sport are compatible words, but there are certain nuances. If the degree of the disease is catarrhal or advanced (not during the period of relapse), then physical education will not bring harm.

Moderate sports activities stimulate increased immunity and improve general well-being.

It is recommended to resort to yoga, fitness, running, aerobics, tennis and other light sports. Loads should be minimal so as not to overstrain the body fighting infection.

Athletes and lovers of an active lifestyle have a specific rule - “above the neck”. It involves playing sports for colds, if the lesion has developed above the cervical area.

Training is allowed under the following conditions:

  • pain in the head;
  • stuffy nose, difficulty breathing;
  • soreness in the teeth and throat.

Sports fans believe that minimal physical activity helps to recover from the disease faster and does not have any detrimental effect on health. Doctors do not share this opinion. They argue that the lymphatic system is responsible for fighting pathogens, and any physical stress negatively affects their functioning. The body already spends a lot of energy fighting the inflammatory focus, and additional stress only slows down the healing process.
