For acute tonsillitis (sore throat), Theraflu LAR is used in combination with antibiotics as a local antiseptic.

Benzoxonium chloride is most active in the fight against gram-positive bacteria, so this substance has an effective effect on the microorganisms that cause streptococcal sore throat.

Also, benzoxonium chloride has a positive effect when acute tonsillitis (tonsillitis) is caused by other bacteria (Haemophilus influenzae, staphylococcus), some fungi and viruses.

  2. Allergic reactions from the immune system may occur.
  3. There is clinical evidence of isolated cases of swelling of the larynx, face, and the appearance of urticaria.
  4. When using the spray for more than two weeks, a brown coloration of the tongue and teeth may appear, but this reaction is reversible.
  5. During the course of treatment, it is recommended to stop drinking alcoholic beverages, since alcohol increases the absorption of benzoxonium.

Adverse reactions, overdose

Theraflu is generally well tolerated by patients - both adults and children. But if used incorrectly, the body has an individual intolerance to the components of the drug, or a large amount of the spray gets into the gastrointestinal tract (or a small amount into the respiratory tract), side effects may occur.

Thus, the aerosol can cause local irritation of the mucous membranes. They can join:

  • rash;
  • swelling of the facial tissue or pharyngeal epithelium.

If the lower respiratory tract is irritated, a strong, suffocating cough may occur. But such a reaction of the body to the use of a spray develops in extremely rare cases.

As for tablets, most often they cause a feeling of discomfort in the oral cavity. This deviation is due to hypersensitivity to lidocaine. In extremely rare cases, the patient may experience shortness of breath, skin manifestations of allergies, and Quincke's edema.

Galina, Kazan

Theraflu Lar spray tastes very bitter and has a slight menthol taste. Very disgusting. I thought that Hexoral was disgusting, but I had the feeling that Theraflu Lar was even worse. I use it forcefully.

I don't know if it helps better than other remedies.

The manufacturer allows Theraflu Lar for children aged 4 years, but I don’t even know if it’s worth torturing them - after all, there are drugs that are effective and at the same time much less disgusting.

Sveta, Kaliningrad

About an hour after taking it, my throat feels slightly hot and my throat hurts terribly. But then the pain goes away for a long time. I used spray 4 four when the inflammation began to slowly go away. The pain and feeling of suffocation are gone. But the lymph nodes remained inflamed.

I don't even know what to say. In general, the effect is not bad, especially considering that the price is quite good compared to some analogues, but the drug still does not cure completely. I will continue the treatment and see how it goes.

Sore throat - tonsillitis, scientifically - is an acute infectious disease that mainly affects the tonsil area (lymphoid formations of the peripharyngeal ring).

The causative agents of this disease can be both bacteria and viruses. Depending on the pathogen, different treatments for sore throat are prescribed. This disease most often affects children and adolescents, but sometimes cases of the disease occur in adults under 40 years of age.

Treatment of purulent sore throat should be carried out in a timely manner, and it is necessary to follow all the doctor’s instructions, since this disease is not so much dangerous in itself as the complications that it can provoke.

When should you take this medicine

Since Theraflu Lar helps to cope with pathogenic microbes and reduce sore throat, it is used, accordingly, for infectious diseases of the upper respiratory tract. The drug is used to treat the following diseases:

  • Chronic tonsillitis,
  • Sore throats,
  • Pharyngitis,
  • Laryngitis,
  • Stomatitis,
  • Gingivitis (gum inflammation),
  • Aphthous ulcers (defects of the oral mucosa).

In the treatment of sore throat and chronic tonsillitis, this drug is used only as part of complex therapy, as an additional drug. The drug is more suitable for the treatment of catarrhal tonsillitis, that is, inflammation of the tonsils, not accompanied by the formation of purulent spots, plugs or plaques.

If you want to learn more about the treatment of purulent sore throat, we recommend reading the article: How to cure purulent sore throat?

The drug is indicated for use in adults and children over four years of age. The tablets need to be completely dissolved in the mouth, since the medicine acts locally, and the spray should be irrigated on the tonsils or pharynx (depending on where exactly the inflammation is localized).

The spray should be held vertically during use. Before first use, it is recommended to make a few pumps to fill the spray bottle, and then irrigate your throat with it.

Dosage of the drug Theraflu Lar in tablets
Age groupMode of applicationMaximum daily dose
Adults1 tablet every 2-3 hours10 tablets
Children1 tablet once every 2-3 hours6 tablets
Dosage of the drug in the form of a spray
Age groupSingle doseNumber of uses per day
Adults4 sprays (spray presses)From 3 to 6 times
Children2-3 sprays3-6 times

Doctors do not recommend using the drug in any dosage form for more than five days. When treating with tablets or spray, you need to know that if there is no relief from symptoms on the fifth day of illness, you should consult a doctor.

Why is sore throat dangerous?

Since sore throat pathogens affect the peripharyngeal ring, the following complications are very possible:

  • Abscess of the peripharyngeal ring, pharynx (cavities filled with pus);
  • Cervical lymphadenitis;
  • Cellulitis of the neck;

In addition, it happens that with improperly selected treatment for angina, complications develop such as:

  • Acute otitis media;
  • Acute laryngitis;
  • Edema of the larynx;

Complications that develop 3-4 weeks after the onset of the disease are very dangerous. It can be:

  • Glomerulonephritis (inflammatory process in the kidneys);
  • Kidney failure;
  • Acute rheumatoid fever;
  • Meningitis;
  • Sepsis.

What types of sore throats are there?

In medicine, there is quite a large classification of sore throats. Each species has its own characteristic signs and characteristics of the course of the disease. So, I distinguish the following types of sore throats:

Catarrhal (characterized by dryness, sore throat, pain when swallowing, redness of the tonsils);

  1. Lacunar (it is characterized by an increase in temperature to 39 ° C, severe pain in the throat when swallowing, general weakness, areas of purulent plaque are noted on the tonsils);
  2. Follicular (characteristic of the same symptoms as lacunar, but occurs more easily, plaque on the tonsils has a slightly different structure)
  3. Fibrous (chills, high temperature, severe pain in the throat, tonsils are covered with a continuous coating);
  4. Herpetic (develops acutely with signs of other sore throats, in addition there is vomiting, diarrhea, red blisters form on the tonsils);
  5. Phlegmous (very rare, characterized by purulent inflammation of one of the tonsils with high temperature, up to 40 ° C, general intoxication);
  6. Ulcerative-necrotic (characterized by necrotic changes in the tonsil with the formation of ulcers, there is a putrid odor from the mouth, discomfort when swallowing).

Main symptoms of sore throat

As you know, symptoms may differ depending on what specific type of sore throat develops in the patient, however, several of the most characteristic symptoms that appear with any type of sore throat can be identified:

  • Severe and constantly disturbing pain in the throat, which intensifies when swallowing;
  • Hyperemia and severe inflammation of the tonsils;
  • The temperature in most cases can rise to 38-39 °C, but sometimes the temperature is low-grade (from 37.5 to 38 °C for a long time);
  • Severe weakness, fatigue;
  • Significant enlargement of the peripharyngeal lymph nodes;
  • Decreased appetite;
  • Salivation;
  • Ear pain.

Treatment of sore throat

Since this disease can be caused by various pathogens, first of all, it is necessary to establish which of them causes the disease. Depending on this, treatment is already prescribed and medications are selected.

The following basic principles for the successful treatment of sore throat can be formulated:

  1. Once the diagnosis has been accurately established, antibiotics are mandatory. Without antibacterial therapy, it will not be possible to cope with the bacteria that cause inflammation. The doctor prescribes a specific antibiotic, since there is a huge variety of groups of antibacterial drugs, and they all act differently on different pathogens. Therefore, to achieve the most effective and quick results of treatment, an antibiotic must be prescribed by a doctor;
  2. Symptomatic treatment is also mandatory, that is, symptoms that cause concern are eliminated:
  • for a sore throat, medications are prescribed that relieve pain when swallowing and reduce a sore throat; gargles have a very good effect (which must be done every half hour for severe sore throat, and every 2-3 hours for moderate sore throat) ;
  • for ear pain, ear drops are prescribed or traditional methods of treatment are used (moisten a cotton swab with a warm solution of boric acid and stick it in the ear for several hours);
  • at high temperatures, medications that lower the temperature are prescribed;

What medications are prescribed for angina?

Broad-spectrum antibiotics are preferred:

  • Penicillin group: Ampicillin (analogues of Zetsil, Penodil), Amoxicillin (analogues of Amoxicar, Ospamox, Flemoxin, etc.), Amoxicillin with clavulonic acid (analogs of Amoxiclav, Amoklavin, Augmentin, Clavocin, Clavunat, Medoclav, etc.) or sulbactam;
  • Group of macrolides: Azithromycin (analogs Sumamed, Zitrocin, Azitral, Sumamok), Erythromycin (analogs Erifluid, Ermitsed), Roxithromycin;
  • Group of cephalosporins (used in the most severe cases);
  • To treat the throat the following are used:
  • Lugol;
  • Inhalipt;
  • Orasept;
  • Bioparox;
  • Hexoral;
  • Kameton;
  • Stopangin;
  • Chlorophyllipt;
  • Propasol;
  • Theraflu;

Gargling solutions:

Herbs for gargling:
