Codelac for dry cough: instructions for use

Contents of the drug and release form

Codelac Broncho can be found on the pharmaceutical market in the following dosage forms:

  • In the form of flat-cylindrical tablets of a yellowish tint, 10 and 20 pieces in a cardboard box. The tablets are intended exclusively for the treatment of adult patients and patients over 12 years of age.
  • In the form of syrup with a volume of 100 and 200 ml. The elixir is a liquid with a thick brown consistency. The package with the drug includes a measuring spoon. Used as part of complex treatment for patients over 2 years of age. Unlike the tablet form, the syrup contains thyme, which gives the elixir a pleasant smell and taste.

The liquid form also contains the following components:

  • ambroxol - an ingredient that helps reduce the viscosity of sputum and remove it from the bronchopulmonary tract;
  • sodium glycyrrhizinate relieves inflammation, acts as an antiseptic component, inhibiting the growth and reproduction of viruses;
  • thyme extract, containing essential oils, has a moderate antispasmodic effect, stimulates expectoration, and relieves inflammatory processes.

Auxiliary components are purified water, sorbitol, nipagin and other substances.

The medication does not contain codeine, an antitussive substance that causes addiction and drug dependence. Thanks to this, it can be used by different categories of patients, including young children.

Medicinal properties

The drug is recommended for use for the complex treatment of cough syndrome; its effect is explained by the specific properties of the active components included in its composition.

Ambroxol improves the process of discharge of bronchial mucus, exhibits expectorant properties, and is a stimulator of the production of a specific substance - surfactate. Promotes rapid liquefaction of sputum, facilitating the process of its removal.

Sodium glycyrrhizinate eliminates the inflammatory process and exhibits an antiviral effect. Along with this, it has a pronounced antioxidant effect.

Thermopsis herb extract is known for its expectorant properties and helps improve the production of bronchial mucus due to its specific irritant effect on a number of receptors.

Sodium bicarbonate changes the acid-base balance of bronchial secretions, while helping to liquefy viscous sputum, normalizes the motility of the epithelial layer in the bronchi, as well as in the lungs.

Thyme extract is rich in essential oils, which have a pronounced expectorant effect, relieve inflammation, and exhibit antispasmodic properties.

How it works

Codelac Broncho cough syrup has a complex effect. By affecting the central nervous system, it reduces the excitability of cough receptors, inhibiting cough reflexes.

The main effect of the medication is aimed at liquefying accumulated mucus. Due to its properties to reduce the viscosity of sputum, the product quickly improves the patient’s well-being:

  • relieves cough;
  • relieves chest pain;
  • prevents the development of bronchospasm;
  • cleanses the bronchi;
  • suppresses the proliferation of pathogenic bacteria.

The peculiarity of the drug also lies in its ability to eliminate the cause of the disease - the inflammatory process.

Once in the body, the active ingredients quickly dissolve in the digestive tract. The maximum concentration of substances in the circulatory system occurs 1 hour after taking the medicine, and can be observed within 4-6 hours.

Codelac Broncho syrup has become famous not only for its herbal composition, but also for its excellent results. By taking the product on a regular basis, you can get rid of cough in a short time. In addition, clinical studies have established the safety of the active ingredients for the body of children of primary preschool age.

In terms of therapeutic effect, Codelac Broncho is significantly superior to its analogues, quickly relieving the symptoms of serious illnesses - unproductive painful cough, whistling and wheezing in the pulmonary tract, as well as difficulty in respiratory function. Thanks to the substance sodium glycyrrhizinate included in its content, which has cytoprotective, anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties, the medicine shortens the period of intoxication of the body and effectively eliminates the runny nose.

!

Codelac tablets, products from the Phyto with thyme and Neo series have a pronounced antitussive effect. In the first two cases, it is achieved using codeine, and in the last - butamirate. The substances are similar in their principle of action.

Codeine and butamirate affect the cough center of the brain, suppressing it. With their help you can get rid of a suffocating dry cough. The substance reduces the activity of the mucous membranes of the respiratory system, which increases the effectiveness of the drug.

Broncho series drugs do not suppress cough. Ambroxol is aimed at thinning and easy discharge of sputum, eliminating the inflammatory process in the bronchi and lungs. As a result, viscous and dense mucus is liquefied and removed from the body faster. Additional components have anti-inflammatory, bactericidal and less pronounced antiviral effects.

Action of additional components:

  • The thermopsis plant allows phlegm to come out faster and easier (activates the work of the bronchial glands);
  • licorice root increases the expectorant effect;
  • sodium bicarbonate changes the pH of mucus in the bronchi, making it less viscous;
  • thyme extract acts as an antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and expectorant.

The maximum therapeutic effect begins approximately 1 hour after taking the medicine. Its duration ranges from 2 to 6 hours.

Indications for use

Codelac Broncho syrup with thyme is actively used in the treatment of diseases of the upper ENT organs accompanied by cough:

  • bronchitis in the acute and chronic stages;
  • complications of tracheitis;
  • pneumonia;
  • bronchiectasis;
  • obstruction of the pulmonary tract.

The antibacterial properties of the drug can reduce the likelihood of complications of pneumonia due to the active suppression of pathogenic bacteria. In addition, the drug will help prevent the development of bronchospasm against the background of severe forms of the disease.

For what cough should I take it?

Cough, as a manifestation of various diseases of the ENT organs, can be dry and wet.

When an infection enters the respiratory tract, the patient experiences irritation in the throat, accompanied by pain and attacks of dry coughing. Codelac Broncho has antitussive properties, helping to more easily tolerate the unpleasant symptoms that arise during the inflammatory process.

First of all, it is recommended to take this syrup for non-productive cough. Thanks to its ability to suppress cough reflexes, it not only eliminates dry throat, alleviating the symptoms of the disease, but also gets rid of the underlying cause of the disease.

When a dry cough turns into a wet one, a large amount of mucus is formed in the lungs, which can lead to its stagnation, as well as the development of various complications. To reduce inflammation and free the bronchi, drugs are used that thin the mucus and facilitate its easy removal.

Therefore, the product can also be used for wet coughs. By affecting the viscosity of sputum, the syrup stimulates its separation and elimination naturally.

Dosage and method of administration

The elixir should be taken with food, washing down the medicine with a small amount of water.

Adolescents over 12 years of age and adults are prescribed 2 tsp. funds up to 4 times a day.

Codelac syrup for dry cough is a new drug for the treatment of pulmonary diseases characterized by a severe inflammatory process with abundant formation of thick sputum, which the patient is unable to cough up on his own. The drug has a complex scope of activity and affects not only the upper and lower respiratory tract, but also affects the functioning of the receptors responsible for the intensity of bronchial spasm. Reducing the irritability of these areas of the lungs can reduce the frequency of coughing and increase the motility of the respiratory system.

What kind of cough - dry or wet?

Codelac syrup is intended for the treatment of dry cough, regardless of the nature of its origin. The drug has proven its effectiveness in the treatment of colds, dry cough and bronchial spasms, provoked by an abundant amount of pathogens accumulated in the bronchial tree. After taking Codelac syrup orally, the active components of the medication reach the inflammatory lesion within 30 minutes. At the same time, the maximum concentration of medicinal substances in the lung tissues is recorded.

The drug dilates the walls of the vessels of the bronchial tree, improves blood circulation, stimulates mucous secretion of the bronchi to quickly liquefy viscous sputum. All these properties together form a powerful therapeutic formula that allows the patient to quickly get rid of even a very severe dry cough in a short period of time.

For a wet cough, Codelac syrup is not prohibited for use, but from a medical point of view, the use of the medicine will not be justified and will not bring the necessary therapeutic effect. Therefore, most pulmonologists prescribe the medication only for dry cough, as required by the instructions for use.

special instructions

Before you start taking the drug, it is necessary to establish the cause of the cough and confirm the need for special therapy. Codelac should not be taken together with expectorants and mucolytic drugs.

Long-term treatment with high doses can lead to drug dependence. It must be borne in mind that Codelac is a doping drug, since it contains codeine.

Due to the likelihood of sedation, during therapy it is not recommended to engage in types of work that require quick psychomotor reactions and increased attention.

What are the differences between Codelac Neo and Codelac Broncho? How much are?

The main difference between these two drugs is that Codelac Neo is intended for the treatment of dry cough, when the patient has no sputum secretion from the bronchi during a spasm. This syrup contains a larger amount of glycyrrhizic acid and sodium bicarbonate, which moisturize the inflamed mucous membrane and help thin the sputum. Prescribed for the treatment of dry cough in adults and children. The cost of this medicine is 155-180 rubles for one 200 ml bottle of medicine.

Codelac Broncho syrup is produced for the treatment of productive forms of cough. It is used in situations where the patient has been suffering from a wet cough for too long, the sputum accumulated in the lungs is successfully released, but the painful symptom itself does not go away. This is the so-called sluggish chronic form of the inflammatory process in the bronchial tree. The difference between this syrup is that in addition to ambroxol, thyme extract is also added to its composition. This is a medicinal plant that is used to treat wet forms of cough of infectious and cold origin. The price of Codelac Broncho syrup varies from 165 to 185 rubles. The volume of one bottle is 200 ml.

Causes/treatments/types of cough, and which doctor should I contact?

When choosing between lozalvan or codelac broncho, you first need to find out the causes and type of cough.

It is divided into :

  1. Dry cough. With this type, there is no phlegm, it is difficult and dry to breathe. There is a constant feeling of dryness in the mouth, while the throat burns and prevents drinking normally. Bronchial mucus, which washes the membrane, is not produced.
  2. Moist cough. It is considered a less unpleasant form. Sputum is released, and bronchial mucus begins to be coughed up. A wet cough is the first step to recovery after severe respiratory illness.

Causes:

  • Colds and viral diseases due to hypothermia.
  • Severe respiratory tract diseases due to caught infections.
  • Occurs after long walks in inappropriate clothing during the winter season.

Who should I contact?

  • An ENT specialist or therapist will help you cope and prescribe the necessary, safe medications.

Do not self-medicate. Do not delay the treatment process, because a normal cough can develop into a serious illness. Remember this and do not risk your health.

Contraindications

In most cases, the drug is well suited for patients of various age groups with certain types of pulmonary diseases.

Despite this, there are a number of contraindications to the use of the drug, which are as follows::

  • individual intolerance to the active components of Codelac syrup, which manifests itself in the form of allergic itching of the skin, rashes, urticaria, disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, bronchial spasm such as suffocation;
  • feeding the baby with breast milk;
  • a feature of the patient’s body, which is the inability to absorb fructose and lactose;
  • children who have not yet reached 3 years of age;
  • ulcerative lesions of the stomach and duodenum, which are in the acute stage;
  • severe liver and kidney diseases, which significantly reduce the performance of these organs;
  • a condition of pregnancy occurring in the first trimester.

If the attending physician, based on the results of a comprehensive examination, determines that the patient is contraindicated to undergo treatment for a severe dry cough with Codelac syrup for other reasons not listed in the instructions for use, then it is necessary to listen to the opinion of a specialist and refuse to take this medicine.

Interaction with other drugs

Codeine is not compatible with drugs that suppress the activity of the central nervous system. These include antihistamines, sleeping pills and painkillers.

You cannot take expectorants at the same time. Absorbents (activated carbon, Phosphalugel, etc.) reduce the absorption of substances, so it is better to avoid taking them.

In the instructions for Neo, the manufacturer does not indicate strict drug incompatibility. You should not take antipsychotics, painkillers, or sleeping pills at the same time.

Broncho is not compatible with antitussive drugs that inhibit the cough reflex - they interfere with the normal discharge of mucus. Ambroxol combines well with antibiotics (if the cough is caused by bacteria) - it increases their effectiveness.

Instructions for use of Codelac syrup

For effective treatment of dry cough, you should follow the instructions for taking the medication shown in the instructions for use. Its provisions consist of the following recommendations, namely:

For children

A child aged 3 to 6 years takes 1 teaspoon of medicine 3 times a day after eating. Children aged 6 to 12 years are advised to drink 2 teaspoons 3 times a day. A child over 12 years old also drinks syrup 3 times a day after meals, but 3 teaspoons at a time.

For adults

Adult patients treat dry cough with Codelac syrup, taking it 4 times a day after meals, 3 teaspoons at a time. After using the medication, it is forbidden to drink water or any other liquid so as not to dilute the medicine itself.

The duration of taking the drug is from 7 to 10 days, but it all depends on the type of lung disease, the clinical picture and the dynamics towards recovery that the patient’s body demonstrates.

For pregnant

In the first trimester of pregnancy, the drug is strictly contraindicated for use, since clinical trials have not been conducted on the ability of the active components of the drug to penetrate the placental barrier. In the second and third stages of gestation, medicine can be prescribed by the attending physician only as a last resort if there is a real threat to the life of the mother and the unborn child. The dose is selected individually.

At the insistence of the attending physician, the duration of therapy with Codelac syrup can be extended if it is appropriate to completely cure the inflammatory process in the bronchi, the manifestation of a dry cough and prevent the disease from becoming chronic.

Side effects

In general, Codelac syrup is well accepted by the body of patients undergoing treatment for lung diseases with an accompanying dry cough. In many years of medical practice, the following adverse reactions of various systems and organs were observed in patients after taking the medication, namely:

  • severe headache and dizziness, which began immediately after taking the medicine and stopped when the drug was removed from the treatment course;
  • drowsiness during the daytime and complete lack of sleep at night;
  • disorder of the gastrointestinal tract, which is expressed in diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, lack of appetite;
  • the formation of red spots on the skin like urticaria, the appearance of a rash, itching;
  • pain in the right hypochondrium, where the liver and bile ducts are located.

Paying attention to the indicated side effects from taking Codelac syrup, you should also take into account the individuality of each organism. Therefore, at all stages of treatment you need to listen to the physiological reactions of your body.
